DVD Reviews of Man with the Screaming BrainDVD Review: SoSo Summary: 3 StarsThis wasn't one of the best films Bruce has made, but there were some pretty funny scenes. As always you can't go wrong when Bruce is involved. It's worth adding to your collection.
DVD Review: Funny, Ridiculous and has Bruce Campbell. Summary: 5 StarsI saw this movie on Scifi on evening and while it lacks a great deal of story, it makes up for it with Bruce's incredible "Evil Dead"-style slapstick. Also Ted Raimi, brother of Sam Raimi, stars as a Russian Rapper/Igor-like assistant with a dancing robot. Even now I have tears in my eyes from laughing at how funny that whole sentence was.
All in all, I still like the part where Bruce screams " I'M ON FIRE!" and pours milk on himself in the middle of the restaurant. Classic Bruce.
DVD Review: Bruce Campbell: the Man with the Cheesy Script. Summary: 3 StarsThe Man with the Screaming Brain (Bruce Campbell, 2005)
B movie icon Bruce Campbell started directing with a few episodes of cult TV series back in the late nineties, and graduated to feature films with A Community Speaks in 2004. It was inevitable, really, that B movies would be part of the agenda sooner or later. Thankfully, it was sooner, and the year afterwards we got The Man with the Screaming Brain. It should be noted for more casual film fans that this is a B movie that is also an homage to B movies, and there are times when the cheesiness goes way, way overboard. If you're not able to appreciate the meta angle, this may not be for you. But cult film fans will find a great deal here to enjoy.
Plot: William Cole (Campbell) is the stereotypical ugly American, a business tycoon who's in Bulgaria to seal a business deal. His driver, Yegor (Hitman's Vladimir Kolev), is having an affair with his wife Jackie (Antoinette Byron from TV's Home and Away), but that can't get in the way of business. They eventually come into contact with Dr. Ivanov (Stacy Keach), a mad scientist experimenting with brain transplants. After both Yegor and Cole are killed, Ivanov messes around with them, and both their consciousnesses end up sharing one body. They couldn't be more different, but they have a common purpose: getting revenge on the woman who killed them both.
Campbell has always been a gifted comic talent, and The Man with the Screaming Brain continues in that tradition. In fact, it goes back to the slapstick days of The Evil Dead in many ways; you can feel Raimi's influence here. (In fact, his brother Ted has a role in the movie.) As I said, it does go over the top in a number of places (and a number of ways), so be prepared, and if you enjoy your humor on a more subtle level, this may not be for you. If you're a Campbell fan, though, it's an absolute must. *** ?
DVD Review: Not My Favorite Bruce Moment By A Long Shot Summary: 2 StarsBruce wrote it, great. Bruce stars in it, sounds like a blast. Unfortunetly I can't say any of this helped the movie much. The movie may be low-budget but so little seems to have been done with...well, so little. The story is out there but isn't supported by a very humorous script to help you forget about it (like Army of Darkness). Maybe the most diehard Bruce fans will enjoy this but I considered myself to be one of the biggest fans and still couldn't jump on the wagon with this one.
DVD Review: Wonderful B-movie horror/spoof from Bruce Campbell Summary: 4 StarsB-movie hero Bruce "Evil Dead" Campbell makes his feature film directorial debut here with some hilarious results. The Man With the Screaming Brain stars Campbell (who also co-wrote the story) as an American industrialist in Bulgaria with his wife. Their marriage is failing rapidly, and it isn't too long before Campbell, his wife, and an ex-KGB cab driver all fall victim to a pretty, murderous gypsy woman who dreams of getting married. Before you know it, a mad scientist (Stacy Keach) re-animates Campbell's body; with pieces of the cab driver's brain inside his head to match. From this point on, it's easy to tell that Man With the Screaming Brain is meant to be as ridiculous as can be, with Campbell giving one of his most manic and wonderfully comic performances to date. Keach is hilarious as well as the mad professor, and Ted Raimi (brother of Sam) is great too as his Igor-like assistant. As you can tell by now, this isn't a movie for everybody, but for those loyal (and some obsessed) followers of Bruce Campbell, this is a must see.
Description of Man with the Screaming BrainMan with the Screaming Brain is a story of greed, betrayal and revenge in the big, bad city. William Cole, wealthy industrialist, winds up with part of his brain replaced by that of Yegor, a Bulgarian street hustler. The two couldn't be more different, but they share one thing - both were killed by the same woman. Brought back to life by a mad scientist, William and Yegor form an unlikely partnership to track down their common nemesis
