I bought this DVD thinking I would show parts of it to my high school classes. There was so much whining going on with the female marine recruits that I had to shut it off before I gagged. If you are looking for a DVD that shows real Marine Corps boot camp training, this isn't for you. I threw it away. My youngest son is at Marine boot camp now. After he left I wanted to see anything that I thought could help me to connect with him . This DVD is great. It was filmed at Parris Island,SC-where my son is- it gave us a little explanation of some of the training he is getting. I really liked this documentary!!! It was very helpful in gaining some knowledge of what goes on in PI for Marine Corp Recruits. THE ONLY REASON I PURCHASED THIS DVD WAS TO GO BACK AND REMEMBER BOOT CAMP. AND EVEN THOUGH I WENT TO MCRD SAN DIEGO, I FIGURED IT WOULDN'T BE TOO DIFFERENT. INSTEAD WHAT I GOT WAS A DVD SHOWCASING FEMALE RECRUITS CRYING AND COMPLAINING THOUGH OUT THE ENTIRE DVD. LITTLE WAS SHOWN ABOUT WHAT THE GUYS GO THROUGH OR THE TRAINING, JUST BITS AND PIECES. AT ONE POINT IN THE DVD YOU SEE A FEMALE DRILL INSTRUCTOR CHEW OUT A FEMALE RECRUIT FOR SMILING ON CAMERA WHILE BEING INTERVIEWED.
THIS DVD WAS A WASTE OF MONEY! I WASN'T MOTIVATING AT ALL. I FOUND MYSELF FAST FORWARDING THROUGH A LOT OF THE DVD JUST TO SKIP ALL THE WHINING AND CRYING BY THE FEMALES. AT NO TIME DID THEY FOCUS ON THE TRAINING.
BOOT CAMP IS MEANT TO BREAK DOWN THE INDIVIDUAL AND REBUILD YOU INTO A MARINE. BUT YOU DON'T SEE THAT WITH THE FEMALES EVEN IN PHASE TWO. ANY MARINE KNOWS THAT THE FIRST THING THAT GOES IS THE "I" MENTALITY. IS NO "I" ONLY "THIS RECRUIT" BUT THE FEMALES ARE STILL STUCK WITH IT.
LOOK, I'M NOT SAYING FEMALES SHOULDN'T BE IN THE MARINES, I MET A FEW IN THE FLEET THAT WERE GOOD TO GO, BUT IT'S HARD TO ARGUE THAT POINT AFTER SEEING THIS DVD. WHILE THEIR MEN COUNTER PARTS WHERE MOTIVATED AND READY TO GO, THE FEMALES (WELL AT LEAST THOSE INTERVIEWED)WHERE CONSTANTLY WHINING ON HOW HARD IT IS.
I RECOMMEND ANYONE WAS WAS OR PLANNING TO JOIN THE MARINES LOOK FOR A COPY OF "MAKING MARINES" BUT THE MCRD EDITION, IF THERE IS ONE. I GAVE IT TWO STARS FOR THE PROMPT DELIVERY AND FOR A GOOD SECTION SHOWCASING THE DRILL INSTRUCTORS.
Description of Making Marines
Each and every Marine Corps recruit has to survive 12 weeks of Boot Camp. It is perhaps the toughest 12 weeks anyone can imagine - especially for those whose average age is 19. To become one of the few and the proud, these recruits must first learn just to survive. More than just a showcase of grueling training, these three hours will shed light on the lives and backgrounds of those who make the decision to become United States Marines. Tragically, the events of September 11th take place in the middle of the sixth week of training. But for most recruits, the acts of terrorism only strengthen their resolve to become modern soldiers. Episode 1. Parris Island- Phase One: Follow young recruits as they prepare for Boot Camp at Parris Island. From all over the eastern U.S., they roll off the bus in the middle of the night and begin their transformation into U.S. Marines. Episode 2. Parris Island- Phase Two: The recruits at Parris Island learn to cope with the punishing regimen of physical training and mental conditioning. In the confidence course, they are pushed beyond their limits. Nerves become frayed, and attrition takes its toll. Episode 3. Parris Island- Phase Three: Training becomes more demanding as the recruits enter the 54-hour Crucible.
