DVD Reviews of Lost: The Complete Seasons 1-5

DVD Review: A Ship of Holes
Summary: 2 Stars

While I'm sure that the Blu-Ray editions are great, mainly just a bundle of the original releases, this review is about the show itself.
Season 1 seemed promising, it had all the elements of a show people might have been interested in. The premiere was particularly good when survivors of crash 815 begin to wonder where they were and just what was all that noise coming from the jungle. The flashbacks during the 25 episodes that follow seem to get weighted down by being overly sentimental and the show borders on melo-drama rather than the paranormal which marked its beginning. However the finale amps you up for more of the story by introducing the "magic box" element into the story by way of the finding of the 'hatch' and not bothering to introduce the Others.

Season 2 was alright by way of story, it got less paranormal or supernatural when it was revealed what was inside the 'hatch' and with the now expanding cast of the tail section survivors. The one major disappointment during this season comes from so many of the deaths of characters that fans came to care about. The deaths made everything seem futile or like their survival was all for nothing. By the end of Season 2 the ever expanding mythology left fans irritated on account of we didn't know yet what had caused the crash of 815 in the first place (luckily the cause was revealed even if it was hard to understand!). But the Dharma Initiative element made everything in the end seem more like a science class rather than a show about the paranormal/supernatural, so even the cause of the crash itself was no big reveal.

Season 3 was even more of a let down as the mythology seemed to take a halt in the backseat while the ever expanding melo-drama began to substitute for the show's lingering pace. The paranormal element was completely blown away by revealing who and what the Others were.
Not to mention were they ever going to bother to explain any unanswered questions? It seemed like the goal of Season 3 was to crank up the action and leave us wanting those answers. Even its one episode reveal about the fate of the Dharma Initiative, seemed more like a teaser rather than an actual story.
With that finale flash-forward, I was less thrilled and more puzzled as to where the show was heading. Did the writers even know what story they were telling? Was there a point to any of this mess?

Season 4 was all about the Oceanic 6, even if there were flash-backs to the island, it was all about how to get back to the island. So not only were we left in the dark about other mysteries that developed through three years worth of episodes, it was clear that the writers were not interested in the mythology they had started. In fact looking back to Season 2, it now seemed like they were interested more in turning Lost into a game-show. I mean come on, what the heck was all that about a button anyway when the back-story didn't even make sense? By now I was so much more interested in what was happening or what did happen on the island itself that I could care less about what happened in the past or even off the island.

Season 5, By now I knew I was not so much a fan as I was just hanging on for story elements that I wished they would develop. But sticking to the game show element they started with Season 2, they amped up the mythology by introducing time travel into the arena. Not that it was all bad, in fact it is really intense when they start to reveal hidden moments in the island's past. But I really wanted them to use the time travel to at least address some unsolved mysteries. Instead once again we are given the game show element, this time it's a nuclear bomb. Yeah well great, at least we know how it will end, everything is eliminated! The time travel never goes anywhere important besides the nuke and a brief flashback to Danielle Rousseau's past, which even if you think about it was still not really a backstory just another brief puzzle piece.

Now fans and hanger-ons like me stand on the bridge of a major meltdown, what will Season 6 the "final season" be about? We're all hoping it will have answers but will they be answers that make us happy? Will the answers be enough to make us want to buy this show on blu-ray? Will we want to watch this show again once we know what the heck was going on in the first place?
I don't know. By all means producers, keep your secrets for all the good it will do you, only the fans will hate you for it so why not!
If we get duped by the Emperor from Revenge Of The Sith, then by all means, abandon ship!
