DVD Review: Magnificent Carmen Amaya

This movie is worthwhile if just for the chance to see the dancing of the glorious Carmen Amaya. However, other dancers in the film are also wonderful and magical. I saw this movie when I was 17, and never forgot it. My mother and uncle were a flamenco dance team from the 1930's to the 1950's, so this movie spoke to me in a special way. Its a version of Romeo and Juliet. It is set in Spain, probably in the early 1960's, within a community of gypsies. Its completely in Spanish with no subtitles. However, even those who do not have a working knowledge of Spanish will be able to follow the spirit of the story, and enjoy the incomparable flamenco dancing.
