DVD Reviews of Live from Texas

DVD Review: Excellent!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an awsome show. I was really impressed by the showmanship and quality music these three guys portrayed! Texas rock/blues is synonomous with ZZ TOP. Any classic rock or blues lover will like this DVD!

DVD Review: It doesn't get any better than this
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a loyal fan of ZZ Top since the days of ZZ Top's First Album and Rio Grande Mud. I even saw them sans beards back in 1973 at the Commodore in Vancouver (about the size of the Fillmore), with Bachman Turner Overdrive as the opening act. During the 70s when I was in my 20s, I played drums in my own 3-piece rock band, and of course played many ZZ Top covers, like La Grange, Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings etc. Followed their progress for years, and never failed to enjoy their music, even during the synthesizer era.

Fast forward to 2009, when I purchased their live DVD, "Live From Texas". As a longtime supporter, my reaction is nothing less than "what a treat", considering the audio is so in-your-face and the video is crystal-clear. There's nothing disappointing or crappy to offend my ancient ears AT ALL! I love it all! Sure, the band are legal seniors now, but their brilliant rockin' show only serves to demonstrate just how rock and roll is performed properly by old craftsmen and masters of their art. Highly recommended for dedicated ZZ Top enthusiasts.

DVD Review: WHY ARE YOU READING BUY IT! WORTH IT!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ok I was at the concert that night and everything especially vocals could have been louder at times, but it was still one of the best concerts I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot! When you watch I do not really notice any sound quality problems. I love this performance and say it is worth every penny! If you want a live dvd of ZZ TOP then you cant be picky at this time. Visually it is very colorful and energetic, and really in my perception captured every essence of the live show that night. One thing I noticed during intermission that was funny were a bunch of kids crying on their parents saying they werent ready to leave that ZZ were coming back out. Even the kids know ZZ TOP ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

DVD Review: Best on DVD concert ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is absolutely the best on DVD concert available! ZZTop is in their finest zone and you will have THE BEST SEAT!

Description of Live from Texas

ZZ Top, the "little ol' band from Texas", has enjoyed enormous success on a global scale since their breakthrough in the early seventies and then their groundbreaking albums in the mid-eighties. Now for the first time one of ZZ Top's legendary live performances has been filmed for simultaneous release on DVD & Blu-ray. The track listing spans their career from early tracks such as "Waitin' For The Bus", "Just Got Paid" and the classic "La Grange", through their eighties blockbusters including "Gimme All Your Lovin'" and "Legs" (complete with furry guitars!) and up to more recent hits like "Pin Cushion". Filmed in their home state of Texas in front of a wildly enthusiastic audience, this DVD & Blu-ray captures ZZ Top at their very best.

That Little Ol' Band from Texas comes up big in ZZ Top: Live from Texas, a concert recorded in Dallas in November, 2007. The hirsute trio (guitarist Billy Gibbons, bass player Dusty Hill, drummer Frank Beard) has been at it for nearly four decades now, and notwithstanding their synth-tinged commercial breakthrough in the '80s, they haven't changed a whole lot in that time--not that that's a bad thing, as ZZ Top is still essentially a fine, gut-bucket blues band. In the course of this 80-minute gig, they dig deep into the back catalogue, mixing in tunes from '70s albums like Tres Hombres, Rio Grande Mud, and Fandango, as well as more recent items from the multi-platinum Eliminator. Their themes (cars, women, good barbeque) are as eternal as their beards are long (well, not Beard's beard; the fact that he doesn't have one remains a source of ironic amusement), their shtick is effortlessly cool, their presentation is minimal (calling Gibbons and Hill's moves "dancing" would be a major stretch), and their stage show is modest by Big Rock Show standards; the crowd eats it all up, especially when the band careens into a set-closing string of hits including "Legs," "Sharp Dressed Man," "La Grange," and, of course, "Tush." This is the only ZZ Top concert performance out there, and while it has occasional shortcomings (in terms of both performance and technical aspects), it's a fine example of a veteran band that remains a potent live attraction despite long-dwindling clout as record sellers.

Bonus material is highlighted by Gibbons, Hill, and Beard playing poker while reminiscing about everything from opening for the Rolling Stones and the menagerie (buzzards, longhorn steer, tarantula, etc.) that accompanied the band on a long ago tour to Paula Abdul's attempt to teach the boys some dance steps (the results speak for themselves). Their version of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxey Lady" is pretty cool, too. --Sam Graham
