DVD Review: Fine Show That Just Kinda Peters Out

My love for the massive talent and the music of Gatemouth Brown goes back nearly 35 years when I first chanced to hear him on a Mississippi radio station. Since that time, I have bought many of his recordings on vinyl, cassette, then on CD and have seen him perform at least half a dozen times. But I had not seen this DVD until I watched a portion of it at a friend's place several weeks ago. I liked the part I saw a lot, so I ordered it as soon as I got home so that I could enjoy it at my leisure.
Clarence Gatemouth Brown Live From Austin Texas features songs taken from his performance on the popular show Austin City Limits. In the course of the show, Brown and his band often dazzle with virtuoso performances of tunes that run the gamut from big band to Cajun and from rock to country. But what detracts from a potential five-star performance is how the show peters out on the last few cuts into a lackluster melange of medleys and just plain aimless noodling.
One can always argue what could have been included or omitted to make a DVD better. Brown's career spans so many decades that he had lots of choices. In this case, he was likely constrained by the format and may have used the venue as an opportunity to show the wider world the breadth of his talent not only as a musician, but as a raconteur. In my opinion, the best cuts by far are Born In Louisiana, Honky-Tonk, and Bits and Pieces.
The DVD comes typically housed in a plastic case of the type most often used for movie DVDs and contains a little commentary on Gatemouth Brown's career and barely adequate information about both the film and the music. I would not use this DVD as a vehicle of introduction to Brown's music, but I can certainly recommend it as a worthy addition to the music video collection of anyone who is already a fan.
