For anyone who loves the blues this DVD is a must. Taped live at a concert and following the evolution of the blues from days of slavery to the present, the music and performers are terrific. The back stories and rehearsal scenes are as good as the actual performances. Am getting a copy for a Christmas present after seeing it for the first time - can hardly wait to see what the reaction will be when we watch it on Christmas day.DVD Review: The Best Blues Show Ever

This is the best Blues show that I have ever seen. It tells the story literally with Huge Megatron TV's showing how the blues came about and the struggles of the Black Man. The performances are from some of the greatest Blues Singers in the world. Martin Scorcese made a masterpiece. I would highly recommend this DVD Video to anyone who loves the Blues. Damn what a historic performance. You will never see this group of fine Bluesmen together again. I recommend this for all music lovers. The Blues are great and the music is for every type of listener. Some of the best performances I've ever seen and I followed many of these players for the past 40 years.

My wife brought this home for me from the library, and I don't know how I hadn't heard of it before. The line up is incredible, and I found the performances to be great. Yes, they are shorter than you might expect, but a lot of greatness in each song. It also seems to be interestingly chronological, with the African to Delta to Chicago to Hendrix and a bit of rap (sort of anyway, on JL Hooker's "Boom Boom"). BB King finishes things up. I actually liked the historical bits between songs. It was sort of like the Kenney Wayne Shepherd tour last year that showed bits of film for context. I swear you can hear the audiance gasp when the KKK photos went up. And the visual for "Strange Fruit" is simply chilling. Again, this is really great stuff! DVD Review: This was for my husband

On feb 7 2003 renowned artists across multiple music genres and generations commandeered the stage at ny citys radio city music hall to pay tribute to their common heritage and passion - the blues. King John Fogerty Run time: 108 minutes Rating: Pg13Part concert, part history lesson, part summit meeting, and all blues, Lightning in a Bottle puts a bright spotlight on this quintessential American music. There are some heavy hitters at work here, both behind the camera (Martin Scorsese executive produced, while the film was directed by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day and King Arthur) and especially in front of it, with a superb house band and a mind-boggling array of musicians (including B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Solomon Burke, Keb' Mo', Macy Gray, the Neville Brothers, Robert Cray, and John Fogerty, to name but a few) performing at New York's Radio City Music Hall in February, 2003. The idea was to trace the music from its beginnings; thus we get an African song (by Angelique Kidjo), some early gospel blues (the great Mavis Staples), acoustic Delta blues, and so on, right up to blues-drenched electric rock and even some rap (a riveting version of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" by Chuck D.). Virtually all of the immortals who defined the blues (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and even Jimi Hendrix, whose fiery style is re-enacted by Buddy Guy) enter the picture, either through vintage film clips or new performances of their songs. One might wish for more insight into the influence of the blues on jazz (Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit," sung here by India.Arie, is a fine song, but it's not a blues tune) or country, but overall, Lightning in a Bottle is an edifying and, most important, highly entertaining portrait of the music and its heritage. --Sam Graham
