Lester Young é um dos meus saxofonistas prediletos. Ele representa o lado mais sutil, leve, contido e delicado do saxofone no jazz, em oposição direta ao sopro mais poderoso, aberto e violento de Coleman Hawkins. Se Hawkins foi o músico que abriu um espaço nobre para o saxofone no jazz - um instrumento até então menosprezado em favor do trompete e do clarinete -, Lester foi o músico que trouxe uma nova linguagem para o instrumento. Por sua tonalidade e cor, Pres (the president of the tenor saxophone players) é considerado o pai do cool jazz, estilo que foi desenvolvido mais tarde por Miles Davis na costa oeste e por vários músicos brancos na costa leste. O vídeo Jammin' The Blues é, sem dúvida, um dos registros mais importantes da história do jazz, embora eu preferisse Billie Holiday a Marie Bryant no vocal.
