DVD Reviews of Leon - The Professional (Uncut International Version)

DVD Review: This film wakes up people's souls.
Summary: 5 Stars

A tragic story, it keeps the audience on their feet, and eyes glued to the screen. Best Jean Reno's film made so far, (haven't seen any afterwards). Very realistic, human tragedy's story, but at the end... well, you'll see. Didn't know much about Natalie Portman. She was adorable. Now she's one of my favorites. Both Natalie Portman and Jean Reno can act, unlike many other overpaid underachievers. One of a few films gets a five stars.

DVD Review: Drowns in sentimentalims.
Summary: 2 Stars

Luc Besson made the film in order to fill a time gap during the making of the 5th Element...and it shows...predictable. At times the film looks more like a quickly put together video rather than a motion picture. The extreme wide format doesnt help either.
I saw this movie after seeing Luc Besson's La Femme Nikita expecting the same kind of edgy film making.
I was wrong. I don't mind an occassional sentimental moment, but this film has been dunked in a vat of sentimentality - Hollywood LOVES sentimentality and you get over 2 full hours of it here.

There are just too many to list...but here are a few: (***SPOILER ALERT***)

1. Leon keeps a pig hand puppet.
2. The over tending to his potted plant.
3. The drinking of milk.
4. Leon buys the Mathilde a cute pink dress
5. The cute dress-up charade Mathilde performs for Leon/

Unlike Nikita, Luc Besson was using this film to break into the US market hence it follows the predictable movie formula to a tee.

Oh...one more thing...what's the definition of "overacting"......Gary Oldman. Okay, Gary...you're a big shot Hollywood actor...we get it....you can tone it down now.

DVD Review: Good upgrade, but not a demo disc
Summary: 4 Stars

Being a Luc Besson fan, I was determined to check out the blu-ray treatment of the movie I consider his best work. The movie is still looking great. Reno and Portman had great performances. The only complaint I have is the video quality as some scenes looked quite dated considering that it is not a very old movie. Wizard of Oz, North by Northwest, Adventures of Robin Hood and Gone w/ the Wind (along with the James Bond movies) went through a process to upgrade video and audio and some of these older movies certain looked better than Leon. I hope that the original film used to shoot this can still be retrieved and somehow be subjected to treatment.

DVD Review: Good 1080p version of one of the best films in existence.
Summary: 5 Stars

There is nothing I can say about the content of this movie that has not been said before. It is my favorite movie (and I consider myself a film buff); It has amazing action, amazing character development, amazing act, just amazing everything. The Blu-Ray version itself is good. For a movie that is 15+ years old, the remastering is fairly well done, though of course putting it up against the likes of new films like District 9 in glorious 1080p will make you see the overall graininess of it. Nonetheless, it certainly suffices.

Important thing to note: This has BOTH the US theatrical version AND the International version (with the ~20 minutes of extra scenes included). This is GREAT because now you don't have to choose only one version; you get both.

The 10 year retrospective documentary on this is also fairly enlightening and interesting for fans of the film/fiction.

If you haven't seen this movie and you own a Blu-ray player, buy it immediately.

DVD Review: Enjoyable
Summary: 4 Stars

Enjoyable movie even now and even better that it is released on blu-ray. I wont go into detail about the plot but i will compliment on the quality of this blu-ray release. Great quality video and audio, both theatrical and extended widescreen editions on one disk, as for the extras and bonus footage, well you will have to find out for yourself if thats what you solely buy blu-rays for, i skip all the extra stuff and go straight for the main movie. A good transfer to blu-ray and good value and moneys worth for a great movie.

Description of Leon - The Professional (Uncut International Version)

Leon, a hitman who thinks of himself as a \cleaner
Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) made his American directorial debut with this stylized thriller about a French hit man (Jean Reno) who takes in an American girl (Natalie Portman) being pursued by a corrupt killer cop (Gary Oldman). Oldman is a little more unhinged than he should be, but there is something genuinely irresistible about the story line and the relationship between Reno and Portman. Rather than cave in to the cookie-cutter look and feel of American action pictures, Besson brings a bit of his glossy style from French hits La Femme Nikita and Subway to the production, and the results are refreshing even if the bullets and explosions are awfully familiar. --Tom Keogh
