DVD Review: Really like it

Just what I need. So much to learn from! The instructor has a great smile and really very good at what she is doing. I like the tempo and the way she keeps going back to re-teach, and then adding variations.
It is worth the high price.
Just one thing that can be improved. When she speaks, it is in a much lower voice so I have to turn up the volume. When she dances, her voice becomes lounder, so is the drum; so I have to turn down the volume again. So all the time I keep doing this act. Having said that, I would not allow this small hiccup to deter anyone from buying it because we can learn an awfully lot from this DVD. It is not for drill, my preference, but rather, for teaching different shimmies.
DVD Review: Great DVD for Experienced Belly Dancers

This dvd was wonderful! I practice with it at least once a week and not only have my shimmies improved but I have been able to add to my shimmy library- for lack of a better term. However, as a dance teacher I do not recommend this dvd for beginners but to intermediate level dancers and above. All that being said, this dvd was worth every penny!DVD Review: Is it worth it?

I have a problem with Iamed prices a huge problem but nowhere have I found the quality of instruction that they usually give. Leyla usually demonstrates the shimmy , then breaks it down, she shows you the correct way to do it and shows you the incorrect way to do it .On most of the shimmies she reminds you of what not to do as you are practicing. When she explains the beat count her beat counts are precise its not (lets just shimmy as fast as we can),its more about having control of the shimmy and working it up.
There is no warm-up so make sure you warm up properly before beginning. I would call her variations, layers instead because on most of them she layers them with hand movements chest movements and other hip movements not so much variations. The only shimmy that had a variation was the choo shimmy to the afro choo choo shimmy.

Rotation shimmy-
Rotation shimmy with variations- the variation include different hand patterns. Which I would consider a layer.
Hip shimmy and Hip shimmy with variations-excellent shimmy drill, wonderful if you keep it and practice with and without the DVD you will surely get the muscle needed to hold the shimmy and make it sharper and faster. The variations includes side to side motion during this she reminds you not to go to fast or things will look sloppy. Then she practiced it with a twist, hip circle, and more as this is the most commonly used one she adds other things with it. The 3/4 shimmy is also broken down here she calls them triplets.

Shimmy Cairo style-
Egyptian shimmy-Her Egyptian shimmy was just amazing.
Muscle Shimmy-also known as the freeze
Combined muscle and hip
Vibration shimmy-super cool shimmy I have seen other dancers use it but couldn't really understand where the movement was coming from
Vertical afro shimmy-I love this shimmy but it has to be done right because it could easily look sloppy.
Combined afro and vibration- this combination looks like a Tina turner move, if only it was as easy as it looked.
Shoulder Shimmy-
Choo Choo shimmy-
Afro choo choo shimmy-Looks so funny super hard to do especially in the position she does it in.
Twist shimmy-ansuyas favorite shimmy, Here leyla break it down to perfection.
Flutter shimmy-the stomach shimmy is absolutely wonderful and I have yet to see it broken down so nicely
Hand shimmy-
Samba shimmy-Which looks like a variation of the choo choo shimmy with a twist and the hand shimmy combined. She says they look more like triplets.
Muscle shimmy while kneeling-This includes floor work. I have never seen this shimmy demonstrated so well and if you can get this down packed it will surely be wowing to your audience.
Calf shimmy
Buttock Shimmy-All I can say is wow I wonder how long it took her to get that down. And I am so happy she explains it so well. This most definitely will take some practice.
Zaghareet shimmy-which is a tongue shimmy. This is that sharp sound that dancers make.
and lastly the performance-where she uses the majority of the shimmies she taught to what sounds like a drum solo, played by her husband Roland.
If you can notice I like that she has a relaxed foot pattern a lot of new material have dancers with their feet about hip width apart and facing straight, she allows her feet to move and she does not always stand in this pattern. Which probably gives her better range of motion.
I am going to honestly say I love this DVD Shimmies are my downfall and this DVD really is helpful it is not just sitting on my dresser. I tackle and work on one shimmy a week. There is no other DVD on the market as good as this, whether it be quality of instruction or amount of information given. Bozenkas every shimmy in the book can never compare to the instruction you get. I would much rather pay a high price for one DVD that gets the job done than get 5 low priced ones that will equal the same amount and give you half the information
I don't think Leyla was trying to give 1001 variations, I think that may have been a cute title to have and still worth it.
The DVD is just enough to help you improve and not so much that you will feel discouraged. Overall you may need to practice on your own to fit the shimmies to different music and to be able to hold them longer but this is a wonderful DVD esp. to people who have a hard time mastering the shimmies. Well worth the $30.00 plus dollars .Might I add she has a very pretty costume on the back of the DVD and in the performance, where she uses most of the shimmies that she teaches.
DVD Review: Do Not Buy This DVD

I bought this DVD based on Eden's review. This DVD is, sadly, really bad. I wish I could get my money back. The information is so basic and badly explained. The production value is also just amateurish. I was really looking for a serious DVD that would break down Shimmies and this is just presentational - and badly at that. I'm surprised that a professional organization such as IAMED would produce something so useless. Sorry. I hate to be harsh, but I want my money back. This DVD was very expensive but worth every penny. It was just so visually pleasing, I watched it over and over again even before I started practising. Every shimmy is very well demonstrated and broken down and Leila is so sweet and always smiling. I have ordered 3 more expensive dvd's from IAMED on the assumption that they are all of this standard.
