DVD Reviews of Lady in the Water (Widescreen Edition)DVD Review: Keep Tooting Your Horn Summary: 5 StarsI was pleasantly surprised with this film. With a title such as "Lady in The Water", I really didn't think that much thought could have been put into the making of the film, but after watching it anyway, I'm glad I got past that. To me, it was like naming something "The Toe on My Foot" Even in the film, M. Knight refers to a book titled Cookbook and remarks that he knows it's a bad title. As for all the egotistical comments about M. Knight, I'm finding it humorous. Why have so many people spent so much time critiquing someone's belief in themselves, especially when they haven't made it clear as to why they cast themselves for the role anyway? So what if he thinks that highly of himself. Does this mean, all the greats past, present and future shouldn't be confident in their works?
I've watched this film 4 times and each time I watch it, I get more out of it. I love the symbolism that goes on throughout the film. I even enjoyed the little detail of this angel-like being named "Story". What is true of this film, is that each of us out there has purpose, and we do not always know or understand what that purpose is. There's a deeper story told in this film, and it seems that so many acclaimed critics have blown over those points because they felt M. Knight was tooting his own horn.
DVD Review: Blu-Ray picture quality very poor Summary: 3 StarsI watched this movie in Blu-Ray.
I am only going to comment on the
quality of the picture. Compared with dozens of other
Blu Ray discs I have seen this one was very poor. It looked more like standard DVD than
Blu-Ray.
DVD Review: a steaming pile of crap Summary: 1 Starsm. night is certainly getting way to full of himself and his movies have shown an almost consistent decline in quality since 6th sense. this one has to be the most ridiculous, pointless use of a couple of hours since "unbreakable". the plot is so full of holes and inconsistencies that it beggars belief that anyone was prepared to stump up the funding. the actors all phone-in their performances (paul giamatti must have been wondering if he needed a new agent). the only one who seemed to be pleased to be acting in the movie was old big-head himself.
after seeing his last couple of movies, i still haven't worked up the courage to see "the happening" (is kharma chameleon one of the jumpers ?? please let him be, please !).
my young daughter is certainly very unhappy that he's been entrusted with the screenplay and direction for the new avatar movie, as that's was one of her favorite cartoon/anime shows and (at 13 years old) even she doesn't think he's going to do a good job with it.
time to call it quits, dude. take off with the money while you still can.
DVD Review: If you let yourself be drawn in.... Summary: 5 StarsYes, I love fairy tales and magic...especially those stories that connect human kind with each other and their best potential (over that which would thwart it). I found this slightly offbeat film totally absorbing...I had intended to stop watching it (on PPV) when the hour drew late and just could not... I was in the grip of the story. I loved the fact that the story was not predictable. I enjoyed the slightly strange characters and the sprinkling of humor. I shed tears at the moments of healing and discovery. I found meaning in the uncovering of the higher "purpose" of each character at the apartment complex. To enjoy it, the viewer needs to suspend belief, open their hearts, and allow themselves to be drawn into a strange world..to respond with intuition and not logic, to accept it for what you see & feel and forego judgment, and allow truth to speak.
DVD Review: Dramatic Ups & Downs, But Overall Entertaining Summary: 4 StarsMan, the first hour of this film was riveting and thought to myself, "Why did this movie get so many poor reviews? I think it's great. It has drama, humor, suspense, fun characters, decent fantasy, horror....you name it. This is a real sleeper of a film."
Paul Giamatti is really as the hotel manager "Cleveland Heep" and Bryce Dallas Howard is believable, if you will, as "Story, the "sea nymph." As long as those two dominated the screen, the movie was great.
Then - wham! - just like that, it got stupid. All of sudden, half of the motel residents - even though some of them are a hoot - got involved with the two main characters and it became ridiculous. They all assemble with this "sea nymph" bedtime story character and start playing all these ridiculous roles as "The Interpeter," "The Guild," "The Healer," etc.
The movie seems to go from an intimate suspense-fantasy to a grab-bag of crazy New Age weirdness. Within five minutes, I almost lost all interest to keep going. However, I'm glad I did because it settled down when this group-effort doesn't do the trick and things gt interesting, once again.
All in all, I just took as a pure fictional fantasy Tinker Bell-type tale and let it go at that. I think this is one of the those films that could easily be over-analyzed and overly interpreted with all kinds of analogies and metaphors. I would just look at it as entertainment, and nothing else. On that level, it succeeds. It's weird......but it surely entertains.
Description of Lady in the Water (Widescreen Edition)Apartment building superintendent Cleveland Heep (Giamatti) rescues what he thinks is a young woman from the pool he maintains. When he discovers that she is actually a character from a bedtime story who is trying to make the journey back to her home, he works with his tenants to protect his new friend from the creatures that are determined to keep her in our world. Or, if you prefer, I See Wet People. M. Night Shyamalan's attempt at a newfangled mythology--about a depressed apartment superintendent (Paul Giamatti) who discovers a sea-nymph (Bryce Dallas Howard) who may hold the key to humanity's hopeful future--is intriguing enough to capture the imaginations of children and adults who haven't lost sight of their innocent sense of wonder. Cynics, on the other hand, will likely scoff at Shyamalan's awkward fantasy, which includes one victim--a film critic--widely interpreted as Shyamalan's revenge against reviewers who panned The Village. Shyamalan originally improvised this melancholy fantasy as a bedtime story for his children; unfortunately, it still feels mostly half-baked and ultimately ineffective due to a number of plot holes and inconsistencies that a writer as talented as Shyamalan should've been able to avoid. For those wishing to learn more about the film's troubled history, and Shyamalan's petulant split from Disney studios, The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale is an interesting read. --Jeff Shannon
