DVD Review: Funny situations in Kyo Kara Maoh
Summary: 4 Stars
First of all, the "Alice in Wonderland" plot never took such a funny, offbeat twist before "Kyo Kara Maoh!" was made. Making Yuri (the unsuspecting boy protagonist of the story) fall into another dimension [full of shonen-ai and yaoi possible situations (^_~)] and have to figure out how to be the king of a demon race is just precious...especially since Yuri is something that doesn't come up very often in anime: a seriously clueless boy. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Yuri may just be more clueless than Kagome from the "Inu Yasha" series...but that's what makes him loveable. He may be overwhelmed, but his spirit to overcome and do what needs to be done in the end is what will eventually make him a good king...at least, that's what everybody is hoping.
As for this volume in general, episodes 6-10 are full of risque situations, including some fun times with Gwendal, Gunter, and Anissina, in search of a remedy to get a cursed tiara/crown off Gunter's head (don't ask, just watch). This bit of comedy also has my friends and I asking: "Are they going to hook up later?" ...of course, I'm not going to spoil who we think may hook up later, but it's still a valid question.
Also in this volume is a hypocritical Wolfram. If everybody who watched the first volume remembers, Wolfram was accidentally engaged to Yuri during a dinner party turned hostile. I hope everybody remembers Wolfram telling his mother (horray for Lady Celi! ^_^) that he didn't like boys, because in this volume, Wolfram exhibits behavior to the contrary. He's exceedingly jealous of everybody who comes close to Yuri, and for some reason thinks that sleeping in the same bed as Yuri is no big deal, since they're engaged now...even though Wolfram keeps saying he thinks it sucks that he's engaged to Yuri at all. All I can say is this: light pink nightgowns with darker pink bows on them look good on Wolfram (*snicker, giggle*). The fact that I just wrote that makes me laugh even more.
In all seriousness, if you like/love shonen-ai and yaoi comedies, you cannot miss "Kyo Kara Maoh!"...the first volume pulls you in, the second volume keeps you laughing...and I hope that the third volume tells me what the hell happened to Yuri, because episode ten ended in a cliffhanger.
Also, even though the voice acting in the English dub is done rather well, the script didn't carry over. There are some differences between the English dub and the English subtitles. I personally like to watch the episodes in the original Japanese with English subtitles, because I get to hear the original emotion put into the words...and also, the dialog is even better with the subtitles. The titles Anissina gives to her inventions make a lot more sense in the English subs than the dubs, trust me.
