DVD Reviews of Kyo Kara Maoh - God (?) Save Our King! ( Vol. 1)

DVD Review: Pass the weinersnitzel... and plenty of sausage, please
Summary: 2 Stars

Fushigi Yugi... with boys... this isn't, though it shamelessly cribs the recipe. Begin with: (1) Average Japanese Schoolboy, (1) Kingdom Threatened By War, and (1) Huge Vacancy to Fill.

Give our hero, Yuri, the royal flush, courtesy of bullies, sending him to a pseudo-medieval pseudo-Germanic realm. Then, add immediate rescue from the natives courtesy of his new doomed-to-be-unrequited-- I mean platonic-- I mean stalwart knight-- Conrad. Stir in a bevy of hot retainers, straight out of a stock character generator: brooding military specialist, overly nurturing bishonen (of course) advisor, and hot-tempered blond brat. Marinate high-school style rivalry with an accidental marriage proposal until romance develops between your new Demon-King-to-be, Yuri, and his cute little blond rival. Smother in jealousy. Allow constant rescuing.

Garnish with hot mom, inventor girl and adorable child who have no prayer of threatening Yuri's main attraction.

Sprinkle gags. Blend until all good taste turns to frappe. Keep the angst factor low, but do remind us of the basic plot that drives this romantic smorgasbord. Surprise with occasional appearances of Yuri in all-powerful Demon-King hotness mode. (Serves: 13-year-old girls and squealing fans of shonen-ai.)

Add plot sparingly.

Wait... and keep waiting for the whole premise of this universe to be explained. Are these Japanese demons? No. Western ones? Maybe. Okay, so there's mention of humans gloriously resisting an "Originator" way-back-when, and the full-blooded Demon tribe can use magic and control flying skeleton lackeys... but are otherwise indistinguishable from us ordinary humans. For all the name, there's nothing diabolical about the Great Demon Kingdom, and Demon King Yuri is a pretty, well... good guy, calling down some righteous whupass in the name of justice and defending the innocent.

Not memorable, but not truly awful either, Kyo Kara Maoh keeps me hoping for the better gag that never made it around the corner. Maybe something was lost in translation, but I can't help thinking that this story wouldn't have been any different if we substituted a girl for Yuri.

DVD Review: Kyo
Summary: 4 Stars

Another great comedy in anime. The characters are fun and the story line is intriguing. It is a little corny at parts, but that only makes it more endearing. It is just a romp.

DVD Review: No matter what anyone says, it's BL.

::contains spoiler about Murata-kun!::

Every Asuka CL DX manga I've ever seen has been Boys Love & the artist for the manga has other BL/yaoi mangas. Plus, it's a Reverse Harem series, which means Yuri is everyone's love-interest. The manga is possibly slashier than the anime, because conrat is constantly glomping & touching Yuri, & I don't recall him doing that in the anime. By season 2, pretty much every guy he's met has some mild romantic interest in Yuri & Yuri feels very hurt when he learns the real reason Conrat liked him. I think there's a good chance he's going to end up marrying Volfram in the novel. In season 2, & Murata seems to be interested in being more than friends now. Not suprising, since his past self was involved with the past king.

DVD Review: For all those fans who enjoy funny Mangas
Summary: 5 Stars

I have only watched the first volume so far of Kyo Kara Maoh - God (?) Save Our King! and it was hilarious. For those who enjoyed watching e.g. Inuyasha, Full Metal Panic, Saiyuki, Maburaho, Tenchi Muyo, Tenjho Tenge, Love Hina, etc.... then you will enjoy this. It does not focus on the gay side much but only really puts it in to provide hilarious moments. Yuri better get better acquainted with the customs in the demon world before he gets in over his head. To think in the demon world if you slap anyone with an open palm on their left cheek it is a marriage proposal. If a knife falls down and you pick it up it is a challenge for a dual and if you pick up a fork (?) and point it at your opponent means you have taken their lover as your own....wierd hah????? I highly recommend volume 1 of this series.

DVD Review: Light-hearted anime guaranteed to brighten up your day
Summary: 4 Stars

I love the serious and angsty anime titles, but after a while, just before I also become suicidal, I need to watch something light and breezy. Something funny, full of attractive guys to remind me that anime does have another side - a side without depressed teenagers and giant robots. And that is where Kyo Kara Maoh comes in...
This is the kind of anime that makes you feel all warm inside without being cheesy or over-emotional. One of the main attractions of this series is that, unlike others, it does not take itself seriously. Yes, this is another series about a teenager being transported to another world to find himself a leader & hero in another world. However, when was the last time the hero was transported down a flushed toilet? One who cannot ride a horse, control his powers, and, by not knowing the customs of the land, finds himself engaged to another guy (and he is purely into girls!).
Also, to make matters worse, the poor guy finds himself not the romantic hero who used to defeat dragons with a heavenly sword in ancient lore - but a demon king whose enemies are humans and are charged is protecting dragons who are now an endangered species!
The series does have serious storylines but they are all created with a lightness of touch and are broken up my comic moments. The guys are all good looking, bishonen characters. There are various degrees are shonen-ai, and I personally love the gorgeous love stricken teacher Gunter. However, any boy-boy love issues are only side stories and are played for laughes.
I really recommend this series if you want something funny to cheer up your day or are having withdrawl symtoms from the wonderful Full Metal Panic series. Another plus is that the first few discs have 5 episodes on so you really do get your monies worth (not like some other series - yes Inuyasha, I am looking at you!). Recommended.

Description of Kyo Kara Maoh - God (?) Save Our King! ( Vol. 1)

Yuri Shibuya is an average baseball-loving high school student. One day, Yuri tries to save his former classmate from a group of hoodlums. Turning on him, they drag Yuri into the bathroom and push his face into the toilet. When they flush the toilet, he is transported to another world! Yuri is then taken to a castle and crowned King of the Demon World! Is he going to end up as the leader of the land, surrounded by his extraordinarily handsome lieges or will he make it back home?
An off-the-wall mixture of comedy, bishonen (beautiful boys), and fantasy, Kyo Kara Maoh! plays like an episode of Escaflowne staged by the cast of Gravitation. Yuri Shibuya is a nerdy high school student whose only real love is baseball. When a group of thugs shove him into a park toilet, he's transported to a parallel world whose inhabitants hail him as their long awaited Demon King. Life is very different in this alternate reality: Yuri slaps the noble Wolfram for an insult--and wins him as a fianc?. When Yuri protests they're both boys, he's told "that's not unusual here." Although his magical powers are largely untested, Yuri has a strong sense of justice and works to become a good king. Despite his many inadequacies ("I can barely tie my shoes!"), Yuri radiates a good-natured warmth that will appeal to fans of Love, Hina and Dokkoida.
