DVD Reviews of Kiss Loves You

DVD Review: The whole truth on Kiss fanatics, a superb film!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a Kiss fan since 1978, and the whole Kiss Army thing is very familiar territory to me. I've known many hard core fans and for a long time was one myself. I still dig Kiss, just not on the same level. This documentary is brilliant, funny, at times an emotional roller coaster, and really digs deep to show how this kind of life (the 90s era of Kiss fandom with fan run Kiss Conventions, and tribute bands like "Alive", "Strutter" and "Cold Gin", etc) can be a bit scary and over the top. Many Kiss fanatics are so dedicated and obssessed, they tend to lose any and all sense of humor, sense of self, and at times take on the personalities of the band members themselves. The one "guy in Gene makeup" fan interviewed at one of the Kiss conventions is evidence of that, as are some of the tribute band guys who clearly have lost a little of themselves to the Gene & Paul personality type. Indeed, not all Kiss fans are warped, and many shown throughout have a lot of fun, and try not to take it all too seriously. The "Kiss Family" is downright scary, in my opinion, that was just way too heavy. The Bill Baker-Ace Frehley segment was hilarious, but very real, and not surprising. Recently, I read that Bill has made amends with Ace, and all is well. Also, the bonus features on this dvd are excellent with interviews with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, and Dick Manitoba from the Dictators.
In regards to the hardcore fans...I say: Kiss rocks, Kiss is a lot of fun, they've made some classic, amazing, and highly influential hard rock music, and their stage show is legendary, no doubt about that. But to design your life after them, and then try an instill that onto your own children, is twisted, and disturbing. I'd say "Kiss Loves You" is a great documentary and it really shows the ups, downs, and in-betweens of being a loyal soldier in the Kiss Army, and also proves that then, and now- Kiss is all things to all people. This film makes it clear- don't take Kiss too seriously! Get a life first, then rock and roll all nite, and party every day. Trust me, I used to be there, collected all Kiss memorbilia, fan clubs, fanzines, bought everything, concerts, wore the makeup, etc, etc. But eventually realized there's more to life than just the Kiss Army. Really, there is! And you can still be a fan.
Bravo, Jeff Heneghan, "Kiss Loves You" is a winner.

DVD Review: Really enjoyed this!
Summary: 5 Stars

I truly enjoyed watching this film..for both Kiss fans and non-kiss fans alike. One can only watch with amazement the lengths some rabid fans will go for their idols. This movie manages to be both hilarious and touching at the same time..Highly recommended!

DVD Review: Save Your Money!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Save your money, this is one of the worst videos I have seen.

To sum it up.

This DVD is nothing more than a glorification of some of the worst looking and sounding Kiss tribute bands I have ever seen.

Nothing to do with Kiss except for a few people who didnt recieve the attention they would like from Kiss.

As for the guy who thinks he looks like Ace Frehley, dream on.
Maybe Ace hasnt contacted you since you sold off many one of a kind Kiss collectables so you could buy Elvis memorabilia.

As for the sorry little kid who made a plaque for Paul Stanley.

The real sorrow story is that the parents thought that spending $100.00 and using the face of thier kid was going to get them some sort of special attention from Paul.

They got exactly what they deserved for exploiting thier kid, nothing.

DVD Review: Don't waste your money
Summary: 1 Stars

Horrible production quality. If you are buying this for the "freak" factor, don't waste your money. You will come away feeling dirty and ashamed for wasting 90 minutes of your life on this garbage.

DVD Review: Not like "Trekkies" with KISS
Summary: 5 Stars

This documentary gets some emotion out of you, that's for sure. I bought it expecting to laugh at crazy KISS fans, but really it created the opposite reaction.
Maybe I'm too close to the source material, being a semi-fanatical KISS Army member myself, as I found this to be a real downer. But a very well done and interesting downer, with a few funny moments.

Here were the high/low points:
-The "KISS Family" was pretty wacky, it seemed like the Dad was the ring leader and the rest of the family was being dragged along for the ride (or brainwashed, in the case of the Paul Stanley obsessed son). Even non-family gets roped in when "Felix" as Vinnie Vincent joins up.
-The "War of the Tribute Bands" is interesting and has a nice wrap-up, although the drummer/roadie for Hotter Than Hell looks so road weary at the end, you just feel sorry for the guy.
-Bill Baker's story really shows the dangers of idolizing your heroes. He got to live the dream of being "friends" with Ace-but ended up being "dumped". Really though, Bill appears to just have an obsessive personality, as he quickly moves on to idolizing Elvis-a hero that can't hurt or let him down.

Other highlights include:

-"Nerdy Gene" at the convention who seems to take no pleasure in being a KISS fan, apparently it's serious business.
-Hearing that the "Paul Stanley Kid" is now 13 and listens to Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.
-The silent 8mm footage of a Hotter Than Hell/Dressed to Kill show.

I recommend this DVD to even the casual KISS fan, as it really places the role of KISS in perspective. KISS rocks, KISS is fun, but maybe not the best thing to build your life around.

Buy it and shed a tear or two...or not.

Description of Kiss Loves You

Ten years in the making, KISS Loves You is a film that began back in 1994 when the band KISS was at a career low and KISS fans around the world were starting tribute bands, uniting at unofficial KISS Conventions and growing increasingly more nostalgic for
The makers of insightful Hellacopters documentary Goodnight, Cleveland provide us with another rock 'n' roll film worth its weight in celluloid. A decade in the making, KISS Loves You captures the reality of being a dedicated KISS fanatic... -Keith Carman for exclaim.ca

There's a pinch of the voyeuristic, slack-jawed amazement that made John Heyn and Jeff Krulik's landmark 1986 short Heavy Metal Parking Lot such a wild sub-cultural curio in Jim Heneghan's Kiss Loves You, a fascinating look behind the curtain of probably the best-marketed band of the past quarter century. There's also a slight reminiscence to 1997's Trekkies, a documentary which explored a similarly fervent fan group. Put it all together, and you have a briskly paced nonfiction flick treat that plays well to audiences both wide and narrow. Kiss Loves You starts out as a bit of a piece of agitprop. Heneghan (the Hellacopters documentary Goodnight, Cleveland), though, smartly makes sure the film isn't just some rah-rah document. A decade in the making, Kiss Loves You captures the reality of fanatical fandom, but also the cold actualities of the fact that sometimes getting what one wishes for has unintended consequences... On the surface, this was a Kiss fan's dream come true, but for some folks the return of their idols brought unexpected losses and harsh new problems. Kiss Loves You delves into unofficial Kiss conventions and tribute band gigs for a wealth of information, conducting interviews with average folks... (and) musicians like Dee Snider, Todd Youth and Dictators frontman Dick Manitoba. The music rocks, but Simmons and cohorts Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley come across as crassly tunnel-visioned businessmen on a certain level. The real point: Kiss loves the fact that you love them.-Brent Simon for shareddarkness.com
