DVD Reviews of Kickbox Yoga FusionDVD Review: Pleasantly surprised! Summary: 4 StarsI am a black belt and certified instructor in TaeKwonDo, so I am very picky about "kickboxing" workout videos. They are usually either way too complex for people who are not trained in martial arts (i.e., the moves required at the pace demanded present a very high injury risk for those who have not been formally trained in how to do them), or they are done by workout instructors who don't seem to have ever done kickboxing outside of an aerobics class.
This is an excellent kickboxing workout video for everyone, martial artists and non-martial artists alike, and Patricia Moreno has clearly had formal kickboxing training. The moves are basic enough so that there should be a low risk of injury, but they are strung together in a way that provides great opportunities to practice strength, flexibility, and precision. Martial artists can always benefit from practicing these things, no matter how complicated or basic the moves, and the moves are very accessible to non-martial artists. The cardiovascular workout is great!
The only complaints I have about this video are that there really should be more stretching before and after the workout to reduce the risk of muscle pulls and injury (I strongly recommend you do this on your own before starting the workout), and one of Patricia Moreno's backup kickbox girls is just terrible! She has no precision and no strength behind her moves, which is unfortunate, since Moreno emphasizes both of these elements quite heavily.
I strongly recommend this video to those looking for a great accessible kickboxing workout.
DVD Review: poorly titled, but fantastic on many levels Summary: 4 Starsone of the things i appreciate about gaiam's workouts is that they are mature - they don't contain the usual porn-like music, cleavage and stupidity seen on other DVDs. this DVD presents workouts that are fun, easy to follow, and really get the heart pumping. no yoga, but it's not needed here.
DVD Review: Great instruction, focus on form, killer ab workout Summary: 4 StarsVery good intermediate workout that balances helpful advice on form with a series of moves fast enough for a good aerobic workout. For me, someone in moderately good shape but new to kickboxing, the routines were much more helpful than other kickboxing DVDs in teaching me how to do the moves correctly. Patricia Moreno times the explanatory sections nicely, introducing each move in a slow version and then rapidly proceeding to a fast version. During the slow version, she encourages you to pay close attention to your body and to the strength you apply to each move. During the fast version, the routine really gets your heart rate going. Unlike some DVDs that focus on teaching the moves, this one never slows down for so long that you feel you've stopped working out (particularly in the thirty-minute routine, which is great). The alternation between the slower moves and the faster ones makes this DVD work a little like interval training.
The DVD includes three routines: a fifty minute kickboxing routine, a thirty minute kickboxing routine, and a fifteen minute abs/core routine. For me, the fifty minute routine drags a bit in places, though it includes a fun bit where you spin around and feel like a you're in a Jackie Chan movie. :) The thirty minute routine works perfectly for me, as I said above. The abs/core routine is fantastic -- it exercises muscles you didn't know you had, using creative and interesting moves that don't strain your neck (a big problem for me with some ab workouts). You'll be sore afterwards, but the good kind of sore, as another reviewer said.
Intangibles: I really like the instructor, Patricia Moreno -- I think she cues clearly, and she is encouraging and pleasant without being annoyingly perky. The music complements the workout without drawing undue attention to itself, and the backdrop is a frankly gorgeous view of mountains. Mountains don't build muscles unless you're climbing them, of course, but on a video I'm going to be using again and again and again, I like to have something beautiful and inspiring to look at. (I guess Brad Pitt could do the trick, but since he doesn't seem to do exercise DVDs, mountains are good.)
The bottom line: I don't think this DVD is being pitched to kickboxing experts, but if you're an advanced beginner or intermediate exerciser, this is an extremely pleasant way to learn the fundamentals while getting a good workout.
DVD Review: Great workout! Summary: 5 StarsPatricia Moreno is an absolutely wonderful instructor. Her routines are very fun, and adds her own elements of style and form to every exercise. I enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to every level.
DVD Review: Loved it! Summary: 5 StarsI am a beginner to kick boxing and working out in general, and this product was great for me! She was enthusiastic I found it fun, and not too complicated. I really felt like I got a good work out and enjoyed myself doing it. I highly recommend it for all those new to the whole work out game.
