DVD Reviews of Kenneth's MacMillan's Mayerling / Mukhamedov, Durante, Collier, Royal BalletDVD Review: Outstanding "Mayerling" Summary: 5 StarsMacMillan, the choreographer of Manon (Anthony Dowell/Jennifer Penny) and Romeo and Juliet( Margot Fonteyn and Nureev) created for Mayerling a most expressive choreography ,although thoroughly classic.Rodolf of Habsburg is portrayed by one of the most brilliant russian dancers ever. After his formidable Spartacus in London,he left the Bolshoi and became a resident guest of the Royal Ballet. As Rudolph,he does more than use his superb technique:he gives life to a most disturbed, cruel, debauched prince, who met Death with Maria Vetsera, his lover,in Mayerling,(1889).The rictus of his face, the expressivity of his dancing are a marvelous and rare combination:Mukhamedov is a complete dancer/actor.Viviana Durante(Vetsera)we had already seen as one of the three shadows in Makarova's La Bayadere, dances an ambitious, depraved young girl, quite convincingly.Lesley Collier and Darcey Bussell give their contribuition to an extremely well balanced performance.
The music by great Liszt is conducted beautifully by Barry Wordsworth .Sumptuous wardrobe and sets.Filmed live in Covent Garden is a ballet not to be missed.
DVD Review: loved the dancing but was confused by story Summary: 5 StarsI have watched this @ least 4 times trying to figure what the heck was the story. The dancing is unbelievable, very intricate. The crown prince is represented as a real womanizer, rapist, psyscopath & a drug user. I didn't really know who he was in love with. The male lead dancer really perspired in this & it was distracting. I guess I need to read the book. Whoever appreciates good ballet this is for you, but read the book or rent the movie.
DVD Review: Trumpets and strumpets, Hapsburgs and heroin - quite a brew Summary: 5 StarsMaylering remains the most lavish production ever mounted by the Royal Ballet, a tour de force for dozens of dancers, and its shockeroo melodrama certainly bucks the tide of the company's customary gentility. In the lead role of Prince Rudolf, Irek Mukhamedov is asked to destroy himself onstage, not only through his descent into drug-addled depravity but physically as a dancer. Kenneth MacMillan asks for more risky moves and daring athleticism every five minutes than Prince Siegfried confronts over the whole of Swan Lake.
When seen live, the constant stream of drunkenness and hysteria feels electric. It does on DVD, too, but I'd recommend taking a breather between acts. The lingering shock of Rudolf raping his bride-to-be before their wedding, which brings down the curtain on Act I, needs some time to dissipate. Taken at one go, the proceedings can easily turn from strenuously lurid to faintly ridiculous. As it is, there are no heroes or heroines to identify with, only various degrees of victims and violence.
As pure dance, however, MacMillain offers two unbroken hours of flashy invention. He bent over backwards to turn Mayerling into a masterpiece. I don't think in the end that it surpassed his Romeo and Juliet ballet, the most danced by far in the history of the Royal Ballet. On its own ultra-theatrical terms, though, Mayerling astonishes at every turn.
A note on the music: John Lanchbery's Liszt orchestrations add a ripe variety of Hungarian flavor, romantic excess, swooning melodies, and danceable rhythms. Some familiar works are relied upon prominently -- the Faust Sym. (as Rudolf's fateful motif), Mephisto Waltz, and B minor Piano Sonata -- while many occasional numbers are relatively unfamiliar.
DVD Review: Star-crossed Summary: 5 StarsI've watched this disc scores of times, and continue to be amazed at what an incredibly seamless tale of tragedy and beauty is depicted. Apparently Liszt never created a score for the piece; the music is a magnificent creation drawn from the range of that composer's works. Some of my favorite parts (not in sequence); Bratisch's heartfelt attempt to lift his master's spirits by lighthearted, semi-comic performance just before the end; the scene where Bay Middleton gives Taafe the trick cigar, causing Rudolf to collapse with uncontrollablle laughter. The night club, with its Bratisch-Mitzi- Blonde Nobleman-Rudolf sequence of dances, and the waiters, patrons and dancehall girls milling and dancing in the background; the music and movement after that, where the protagonists dissolve into decadent sensation. This is an amazingly evocative picture of Imperial Vienna, with all its grandeur, tradition, rigid formality, corruption and impending doom superbly conveyed. The mighty Victorian era, about to crack at the seams and shatter on the ground.
The principal dancers - Matthew Hart, Darcey Bussell, Vivianna Durante, Mukhamedov and the rest - could not look more suitable for their roles. This poignant tale of love and decadence absolutely should not be missed.
DVD Review: A Must-See, But Not For Beginners Summary: 3 StarsI personally do not own nor have seen this dvd. But don't stop reading because of that! I saw the ballet live a few months ago, and was shock and appalled and enjoyed it immensely. But inbetween scenes, I had to stop and examine the plotline in the program to understand what had just happened, so if you're not terribly familiar with the ballet, I don't recommend seeing it without first doing some research. It's an incredible ballet, but lock up the kids--this is not for innocent eyes, and also probably not a good started for those new to the ballet world. I hear there are many close-ups on this dvd, and this is a tragedy, as ballet is meant to be seen on a full stage. Even sitting in the nose-bleed section, I was still greatly affected by the emotions on-stage, even if I couldn't see the dancers faces clearly. For the sake of culture and education, I hope everyone that sees this dvd to greatly enjoy it, but if you get the chance to see it live, do it!
