DVD Reviews of Jillian Michaels: Yoga MeltdownDVD Review: The Good and Bad Summary: 3 Stars
I love Jillian's workouts. Her 30 Day Shred is 25 of the most productive minutes I have ever done, and I am a fan of at-home workouts. I have done many with great results so I consider myself well-versed (I have had great results with many of the Tae Bo workouts, The Firm, Jillian, P90X and others).
I bought this yoga DVD because I needed to stretch more, and was looking for something a little less intense than 30 Day Shred but with the same bang-for-your-buck timewise. I've started with the beginner workout (not the norm for me, but I am not that advanced in yoga) and have not advanced after two weeks of use.
Here are the good parts: First, while I didn't necessarily buy it for this reason, it is an intense workout. Jillian uses yoga poses as a base for some intense cardio movements (such as reps of Warrior 3).
The bad, that means it's not really yoga. If you're looking for proper stretch and true yoga, this is not your DVD. If you want a workout that uses your body weight resistance, it is.
Another good: it's 30 minutes and I swear my arms looked better after two days. It had been a while since I worked out, and my arms are generally in good shape but they were looking soft. Then two days of this, and they had great form again.
The time issue was huge for me... I have an insane schedule and I can fit it in- before or after work-without having to really sacrifice any time.
Another bad: Jillian clearly doesn't like yoga. First, she's created a yoga DVD that-while effective in giving an intense workout-isn't yoga- it's essentially cardio based on yoga moves. Also, she makes several comments throughout the DVD that imply she thinks a lot of yoga talk is BS. After repeatedly saying "Dive up," which is weird in the context she uses it in since you don't really "dive your tailbone to the sky," she also keeps saying things like "move away from the earth" which you can tell she's uncomfortable with and finally "Melt your heart to the floor..." by the end of the video, she gives up, saying with an eye roll "That's Yoga speak for go down low. I am just going to speak English." So you can see- if you're looking for an intense yoga workout that respects the practice, this isn't it. A huge part of yoga, if you forgive the cheesiness, is connecting your mind with your body-- feeling your breath through the body, connecting physically and mentally with the movement. This DVD has none of that. While I like the workout, I got the vibe that she just needed to create a yoga DVD to complete her collection.
Lastly, the biggest BAD... know that I love this DVD myself when I say this, but to be honest, I think if you do not have any experience in yoga you could really hurt yourself. She never goes through the proper forms of the poses, and even shows off improper form in some (When I tried to do one move her way I actually felt pain in my lower back- not good pain, bad pain, and had to ease off immediately.) Even her downward dog, so basic, is never illustrated correctly- there's no talk of raising the tailbone or lowering the heels, it's not really done correctly for an effective stretch. If I didn't have experience with yoga I might not know the proper form and think I could easily hurt myself. I definitely think she would have benefited from including a chapter on the DVD that shows proper form, because the rest of the workout moves quickly and unless you know what to do you would never really have a chance to fix your stances, which is essential in yoga.
I do like this workout, because it is a bit of a hard core fusion of yoga and cardio, and it's great when that's what I am in the mood for. However, for beginners I don't recommend it, (though I myself am only a novice, I do have limited yoga experience) and if you're looking for a real stretch I'd suggest something like The Firm or another more "yoga" DVD.
