DVD Reviews of Jeremiah Johnson

DVD Review: Family favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

From my father-in-law to our grandsons, we have all enjoyed this movie many times. This is the third DVD I have purchased of Jeremiah Johnson. It is a great portrait of what it was like to live the life of a mountain man.

DVD Review: Slow Shipping from DVD Legacy
Summary: 1 Stars

I ordered 3 DVD's from DVD Legacy. This is the only one I received. My credit card was charged for all 3 of them. DVD Legacy would not respond to my inquiries. Amazon never offered to help.

DVD Review: Rugged Mountains, Rugged Man
Summary: 4 Stars

This was just a simple tale of a "mountain man" and his life over a period of time surviving in the Rocky Mountains. The time period is the first half of the 19th century. Robert Redford plays "Jeremiah Johnson."

The film shows Johnson's battles with the Crow Indians, his family life after he is "stuck" with an Indian bride and a young boy and some of the tragedies that befall all of them, as well as a few other people.

Will Geer, a wonderful Native American actor, gets good billing in here but is only in the last 20 minutes! He also has no dialogue. This is mainly a one-man show with Redford, and that's okay. He's usually interesting and he's always in beautiful movies, photography-wise.

The scenery - filmed in Utah - is great stuff and looks awesome on widescreen DVD. It really needs to be seen in that format to be fully appreciated. Actually, the best would be seeing this on a sharp Blu-Ray transfer. Hopefully, that will come someday.

DVD Review: Preachy but good
Summary: 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this when I saw this back in 1973. I bought it on VHS and DVD recently. As a living history (re-enactor if you will) person, I enjoy films like this. I find it on the edge of being a 'message' movie just on the border with entertainment. I really like the in-depth mind probe of the film based on "Liver-eatin' Johnston" a real life mountain man. It was also pretty authentic. Suprising for a film on the end of the 60's.

DVD Review: Jeremiah Johnson
Summary: 5 Stars

Simply wonderful. Redford bought part of the land on the film and resides there now.

Production Notes

After they first worked together on the 1966 film This Property Is Condemned, director Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford continued their long-lasting collaboration with this 1972 drama set during the mid-1800s, about one man's rugged effort to shed the burden of civilization and learn to survive in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. Will Geer is perfectly cast as the seasoned trapper who teaches Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) how to survive against harsh winters, close encounters with grizzly bears, and hostile Crow Indians. In the course of his adventure, Johnson marries the daughter of a Flathead Indian chief, forms a makeshift family, and ultimately assumes a mythic place in Rocky Mountain folklore. Shot entirely on location in Utah, the film boasts an abundance of breathtaking widescreen scenery, and the story (despite a PG rating) doesn't flinch from the brutality of the wilderness. --Jeff Shannon
