DVD Reviews of Jennifer Kries, Yin YogaDVD Review: Not a total follow-along Yin Yoga practice. Summary: 4 StarsBeth Cholette wrote a great review, I agree with 100%.
Jennifer still over talks at pretty quick speed, the music is nice, but too light which doesn't help overcome Jennifer's stiff, but earnest teaching. Jennifer gives great info about meridians & how the poses help the body which I wish ALL dvds did, even as an alternate narration choice.
For all she teaches, she could have spoke more slowly and made the poses actually last the 5-10 min they should be. Even to save money, she could have only said how to do the pose while she was there, then had an alternate workout choice w/her narration spoken more calmly while only having the backup students hold the pose.
As another said, Jennifer still comes off as arrogant but I think it's more that she is an overachiever or a perfectionist. Her energy in these dvds don't induce calm or positiveness it should, especially for yoga, though I am grateful she has brought the mind/body workout with such great production quality to mainstream. If anyone is sensitive to to stiff, tight, negative energy, keep this in mind, but the knowledge found in it may compensate for that.
DVD Review: Pretty good instructional, not for practice Summary: 3 StarsThis video taught the poses, but you can't follow along and do the workout with her, because it is merely instructional. I like to put in the video and do my workout with the tape. I learned the poses and do them in my own time. It was only ok.
DVD Review: Love this work out. Summary: 4 StarsI have tried other Yoga DVD's before and they usually are too advanced or take too little time in each pose.... moving quickly from one pose to another leaving the student to develop their own work out.
Not the case here.
There are complete workouts for three different levels introducing more difficult poses with each workout.
I have a bad right hip due to an automobile accident, and in being in my 50's had lost much of my flexibility. This video has helped me get some back using the basic workout. I can see eventually moving up to more advanced levels.
I also appreciate her discussion of WHY one is doing each exercise in terms of meridians and Chi Gung.
I really liked her style and would recommend this as a beginning Yoga instruction or as a means of getting one's flexibility back.
DVD Review: Good start to Yin Summary: 3 StarsI received this DVD by mistake - I had ordered something entirely different; but, I really like where it has led me. As an introduction it is great.
As a yoga newbie I am often disappointed when a DVD instructor whips through a practice. I am not very flexible yet and my balance skills need some real work. Sometimes I can't get anywhere close to a certain pose. If I can take a second and hold it, I can feel myself start to open up - but then the instructor is on to something else before I can further explore what is happening with my body.
Then this DVD showed up and I learned about a whole new world of slow-moving yoga and holding poses for minutes instead of seconds. It has changed my focus and how I do yoga. Now I do a regular routine every other day and Yin on the in-between days.
Why only 3 stars? Well, for starters her voice is very irritating! And She never shuts-up! And she comes across as a little arrogant or something. The other reason is that she doesn't hold the positions for as long as she recommends. I hate having to stop and start the DVD when I am trying to be fully present in my practice.
All that being said, it is a good place to start if you are interested.
