DVD Review: Better than you think

George C. Scott is best known for his role as Patton, in the film of the same name. His brash, stern, controlling figure in that film is a man of honor who tumbles through his own failings. In that, he is like Mr. Rochester, the enigmatic anti-hero of Charlotte Bronte's Gothic novel, Jane Eyre. Whether you love or despise Mr. Rochester, he is a compelling literary figure without whom Jane Eyre would have floundered in literary history's dust bin. In this 1971 film version of the story, Scott does justice to this character much better than one might expect. See this film for his Rochester, rather than York's Jane. York is much too old for the role and not nearly as feisty as the novel's heroine. Scott, on the other hand, has the Rochester smolder down pat.
