Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The 80s was a great time for horror films. A time when scares were made in the old school style of prosthetic models and molds, for visual effects magic, instead of with today's more modern CGI, which many feel just doesn't have that same realistic feel. The demand for higher standards in the midst of what seems like a huge lull in horror quality takes and interesting turn with the release of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer.
Set in present day USA, the film stars Trevor Matthews in the title role of Jack Brooks, a young plumber whose struggles with anger issues have been haunting him ever since witnessing the death of his parents and sister, at the hands of a monstrously evil troll, hiding in the woods. Now in therapy and dating his current hot tempered girlfriend, Eve (Rachel Skarsten), Jack agrees to take a late night science course at her request. There he meets a slightly odd but good natured professor (played nicely by scream legend, Robert Englund) who asks Jack if he can take a look at his water pipes, which haven't been working. Unknown to both men, a horribly evil force, in the form of a living black heart, has been buried underground at the professor's home and he winds up becoming possessed. Next thing you know, the science teacher slowly begins decomposing into a disgusting creature, hell bent on turning his students into mindless, bloodthirsty cannibals. It's up to Jack to face his fears and become the great warrior he was always destined to be.
The DVD is loaded with additional special features, including:
"Audio Commentary" - with director Jon Knautz, producer/actor Trevor Matthews, producer Patrick White, & composer Ryan Shore.
"Behind The Scenes" (50 min) - a look at the making of the film, with interviews from the cast and crew.
"Creating The Monsters" (15 min) - creature and special effects designer, David Scott, hosts this insightful featurette, which details the monster effects work for the film, from original conception to final completion.
"Creating The Music" (13 min) - composer, Ryan Shore, along with the filmmakers, share their thoughts and views on creating the score for the film, with footage from the actual orchestral sessions in Bolivia.

Camping (3:51) - an additional scene with young Jack at the campfire, where his Dad tells a scary story.
"Porch" (1:10) - a nice human moment between Jack & the Professor, who discuss the science class together. (I liked this scene)
"Apartment" (6:24) - Jack goes to his apartment and finds Eve already there. The two have a huge fight.
"Finish Eating Omar" (0:29) - additional shots of the Professor Monster devouring a student.
"Bar" (3:58) - the Professor takes his class to a bar, where he proceeds to eat like a pig. (Some great moments by Robert Englund here. Some may question the scene's deletion from the movie.)

This is one wild ride of a horror movie, which really brings back those great 80's old school styles of filmmaking. The scares and gore are frequent and the story and acting never take themselves too seriously. Trevor Matthews (who also co-produced) does a good job as monster slayer, Jack Brooks. This is a perfect horror film to check out, in the tradition of horror classics like the The Evil Dead, and Dawn of the Dead.
