DVD Review: Down home fun.
Summary: 5 Stars

By the way the ratings are shaking out it seems you either love or hate this film. I loved it. I read this was the first film Kelli Herd made so I'm impressed. I think it was done well for a first effort. There's nothing extravagant about it and the actors seem to be local Texas talent but they do a great job. The only actor who bothered me a bit was the male lead whose delivery seemed flat most of the time. The dialogue between the women felt authentic and the relationship didn't feel rushed. Aspects of it hit home for me personally. I have to admit the male couple got short shrift on quality dialogue but I think there was meant to be a lot of tongue-in-cheek southern small town silliness and they tended to get more of it. I commend the ladies and/or the director for the tactile nature of their relationship which I think is missing in a lot of other lesbian films where touching only seems to occur in love scenes. There is a very funny exchange near the end of the film I won't spoil for you but I have to share another I loved because it's so real and we've all heard something like it at some point, "Do I have anyone interested in helping me with the Lord's work?"... "Will there be any food?" I avoided this movie for quite awhile because of the bad reviews but I'm so glad I finally took the plunge.

DVD Review: It's In The Water
Summary: 4 Stars

I loved this movie. Both lead characters have tons of chemistry alone or together. This movie is over ten years old having been made in 1996.I feel that it is well ahead of the other movies made during that time frame.Lots of humor thrown in.Don't be in the mood for a serious movie when you watch this.Try to have fun with it and see the humor in not only the acting but the scenery and the clothing.Don't forget this was made independantly (which means only one camera was used)thus you will see a few bloopers. The two sex scenes are done quite tastefully yet both are beautiful in there own way.Spend a few bucks on this and I'm sure you will be pleased.

DVD Review: The problem with indies
Summary: 2 Stars

Although I, too, appreciated the story and the message which this film sent, I couldn't help but think about one of the sad facts of "indie" GLTB film making, i.e., indie = not very well made. "In the Water" basically could have used a way, WAY more competent screenwriter, a way, WAY more incisive director, and with a few exceptions, way, way, WAY more talented actors, as opposed to those who are graduates of the Indie Filmmaking School of Hysterical Overacting. As it happened, I watched "Water" on the same evening as I watched "Hairspray". I fully understand, of course, that "Water" probably had a total budget equal to John Travolta's wardrobe costs in "Hairspray", but the contrast was there nonetheless. And not in "Water's" favor. In short, watchable for the message. Pretty gruesome in the execution.

DVD Review: Have a Swig, Pardner
Summary: 4 Stars

"It's in the Water"

Have a Swig, Pardner

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"It's in the Water" is fun, lots of fun. Sure the premise is ridiculous but the film is a delight and makes no pretense at being any more than it is--a feel good movie.
In the small southern town of Azalea Springs, the country club set is the ruling class. Every woman must belong to the League and big hair is still the favorite of the luncheon set and only hairdressers and interior decorators are gay. When the League membership gets an announcement that they must do some work that includes contact with "those" people, the women are stunned and unsettled, to say the least. But when the real shocker comes from a drunken comment that the water is contaminated with something that turns people gay, all hell breaks loose. This is enough to destroy the homophobic town and sure enough, it starts to do so rather quickly. Brother Daniel yells about the water at his "Homo-No-Mo" meetings, the local newspaper picks up the story, rabid homophobic picketers go to work protesting and panic ensues. In the middle of all of this is Alex Stratton, a young woman whose husband keeps his distance, an overbearing mother, and is bored with tedious social chatter and those that criticize her shoes. Not listening to either the wishes of her husband or her mother, she accepts a job at the Hospice where she becomes reacquainted with her best friend from high school, Grace Miller, who has just returned to town after a nasty divorce. The two women feel a magnetism for each other and when they are caught kissing in the Hospice supply room, they both fall out of grace with the society of Azalea Springs. Mark, who works at the newspaper and is a regular at Brother Daniel's meetings, becomes involves with Tomas, a Latino house painter, who makes the mistake of assuming that an ex-gay meeting is an AA meeting. All the while the rumors about the water persist. The two love affairs become the catalyst for the unraveling of Azalea Springs and it is not just the water that causes it to do so.
The movie makes light of how society and narrow minded people regard us in many instances especially in small southern towns. What happens here could actually happen and the issues are presented in light humor.
The two lead actresses--Keli Jo Chapman as Alex and Teresa Garrett as Grace are always right on and totally believable and their dialogue always rings true. Spencer, the male lead, is one of the guys we all know and he pulled off the stereotype beautifully.
"It's in the Water" is camp and acted with exaggeration, maybe a little too much sometimes but it makes up for that by its offbeat and affirming ending and the sensitive treatment of the two leads. Largely a caricature to achieve the comedy that it does, there are a lot of good lines and the love scenes are handled with great sensitivity. It is a fun movie and should not be taken seriously. Its sole purpose is to entertain and all we have to do is sit back and enjoy it.

Description of It's in the Water

Frenzy breaks out in the small southern town of azalea springs when a tipsy comment starts the rumor that the local drinking water turns you gay. The resulting turmoil becomes the catalyst for residents who must now face or deny their own realities in this outrageous comedy with a queer little twist. Studio: Wolfe Video Release Date: 05/16/2000 Run time: 100 minutes Rating: Nr
It's in the Water is a charming little indie set in the sleepy, conservative Southern town of Azalea Springs. When an AIDS hospice opens up, the local homophobes go up in arms, polarizing the community. The heart of the movie, though, is the story of Alex, our listlessly married heroine who begins to have second thoughts about her orientation. (There is also a very slight "comic" subplot involving a rumor that drinking the local water turns people gay. Ignore it.) While Alex's discovery process is a rather quick one due to the constraints of movie timing, it is well handled, including an affectionate sequence during which Alex watches the entire Lesbian Film Canon. While the straight characters tend to be rather broadly drawn, It's in the Water is a gentle film at heart and well worth an evening. The DVD edition includes commentary by the director and leading actresses that is both funny and interesting--in particular the discussion of what it was like for two straight actresses to play their first gay love scene. --Ali Davis
