DVD Reviews of Iron Man (Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition)

DVD Review: A Man of Iron is Sronger than a Man of Steel
Summary: 4 Stars

While I was waiting for my ticket for Iron-Man, I got to thinking, 'Who actually has heard of Iron-Man before?'. He's not a mainstream hero like Batman or Spidy, he hasen't been to big on the comic book scene, but still, a movie was made. Whats gonna be next, a Green Lantern flick?

The plot of Iron Man is kept semi-simple, portraying Mr. Billionaire Tony Stark as a Middle Eastern hostage, forging a super-soilder suit to escape, then expanding on the idea, which turns into Iron Man. Corperate greed, double-dealing, and press coverups show a diffrent side of superheros that we've never witnessed in movies(this is before Dark Knight). Ditching the famed cookie cutter look at hero's, Iron Man dives a layer deeper into realism for a superhero.
On the down side, having the movie take more time showing the 'Fast Life' of celebraties and less of the actual Iron Man kicking booty made this feel like more a prequal, rather than the first instalment. Seeing the hero in a suit with a tie more than a metal one isen't too heroic, often he'd talk at mawk speed with press, giving sarcastic responises, which is 'chic' I guess, but not needed for a Hero movie. This was more of an orgin story on how the suit was built, and Tony's life, more than him donning his matalick tights. But when they where donned, hell hath no fury, and coolness, than Tony Stark. We need to see more of that.

Just as a side note, has anyone seen the trend right now of Superhero movies and how the baddies are dark versions of themselves? SpiderMan 3 had Venom, a dark suited villian that had exact same powers. The new Hulk featured a bigger, badder, and darker shade of green Hulk as the nemises, now Iron Man features a guy in a big grey body suit with sooped up Iron Man poweres. Is this gonna be the trend now?

DVD Review: Doesn't disappoint
Summary: 5 Stars

Comic book adaptation in which Robert Downey Jr plays brilliant industrialist Tony Stark who designs high-tech weaponry for a living but sees the error of his ways when he is kidnapped by militia in Afghanistan who want him to make high-tech weapons for them so they can rule in Afghanistan and even further afield. Stark eventually manages to escape from them after some months by creating a suit of robotic body armour which he uses for his escape but after this harrowing experience of being in captivity sees how the weapons that he designs can easily fall into the hands of evil men who can then use these weapons against the innocent. Stark finally comes to believe that his weapons do more harm than good and decides on a new direction in life: fighting on behalf of the oppressed and protecting those he had previously put in harm's way. The suit of robotic body armour he originally designed whilst in captivity is modified and upgraded and with the superhuman powers that the suit endues him with Stark goes off to fight against the forces of evil as Iron Man. I was looking forward to seeing this film as it looked excellent from the trailer I had seen and I was aware of the Iron Man character from my comic book reading days. And indeed the film didn't disappoint. Robert Downey Jr is excellent in the Tony Stark and Iron Man roles, the plot is satisfying and the villains make worthy adversaries. The special effects are also top notch, such as when Downey Jr is putting on the technological marvel that is the Iron Man suit, when Iron Man is flying and when Iron Man is involved in a fight. On top of this the film has a number of witty one-liners (mainly from Downey Jr) and the ever excellent Gwyneth Paltrow as Downey Jr's assistant Pepper Potts. I was also pleased at the hints in the film of a sequel or sequels to come. Bring `em on!

DVD Review: The BR is horrible
Summary: 2 Stars

I will just rate it according to the merit of its video and audio part, not the movie itself.

One word: BAD.

Video: It has good details (HD grade), but the contrast and brightness is off, I have to lower the brightness by a huge amount, and pump up the contrast, the result is still not a 3D picture as you would expect from a BR movie. (6/10)

Audio: This is where it sucks, the bass is liked farting inside a bag (sorry for the words, but it really is the best description), you don't feel it that much, the surround effect is minimum. You have to turn the volume up and then the dialogue may be too loud. May be it needs some huge adjustment as the video, but I have no time or interest to do it. (3/10)

DVD Review: What do you expect!?
Summary: 5 Stars

The best way to describe this movie is very very simple. If you are any kind of a fan of iron man you will love this movie. They went a lil haywire with the special effects but stayed very true the story of the book while the writers made it their own in ways. which is whats supposed to happen. if your not a fan of comic books you should be they are what makes a childhood worth having. well that and not having a job. Anyways i want to say thank you to the writers and director and to Mr. Downey for making a childhood dream of mine come true.

DVD Review: BEWARE
Summary: 3 Stars

For those of us with slightly older Bluray players, this one just sits there and loads forever. Did manage to see the Parmaount logo on one of the discs. Just did a full firmware upgrade a week ago. Disk will still not play. Oddly, other new Paramount Discs like Godfather played fine. Just a word of warning to those who had the Batman Begins problem this past year - It's the same old same old. These companies do the best the can to screw the consumer. It's really criminal.

Description of Iron Man (Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition)

Suit up for action with Robert Downey Jr. in the ultimate adventure movie you've been waiting for, Iron Man! When jet-setting genius-industrialist Tony Stark is captured in enemy territory, he builds a high-tech suit of armor to escape. Now, he's on a mission to save the world as a hero who's built, not born, to be unlike any other. Co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, it's a fantastic, high-flying journey that is "hugely entertaining" (Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal).
You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quit hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton
