DVD Reviews of Inuyasha, The Movie 4 - Fire on the Mystic IslandDVD Review: Worst of the four Summary: 3 Stars
I consider myself somewhat of a retired Inu yasha fan. Not to say that I now dislike the series, or any of the other movies. I'm just not as enthusiastic about it as I used to be. That aside however, I viewed this movie about a year ago in a fan sub, and I can honestly say even then, when I was way more of a fan than I am now, I thought it was far inferior to the other three films.
However when considering Inu yasha I suppose that it is unfair to completely trash these movies for not being perfect. What alot of people don't seem to understand is that these films are not meant to be spectacular pieces of film making, they are just meant as a fun side attraction for the average fan, which is basically how the first three movies played out. But the problem with movie four is that it barely even manages to suffice as a novelty, it comes up very short and for a number of reasons.
First, lets all agree on one thing, while the previous Inu yasha movies were fun and entertaining the plot contained within them was certainly not ground breaking or astonishing in any way. And that being said movie four is no different aside from the fact that it is even less ground breaking and astonishing. It's not comepletely horrible, but its just alright, where as the other movies qualified for a solid "good."
The main problem lies within the story telling and the way things played out. The begining I must say moved along quite smoothly, I did like the begining, it had the usual lead introductions as well as some more minor character introductions. Then once we have everyone introduced things just sort of go the usual route. Bad guys are introduced, Inu yasha fights them once, he loses, then from here we get Inu Yasha, along with a little half demon kid stuck inside a furnace. Yeah, you read right "furnace" or kettle, it's basically a giant hell trap with lots of fire. Now up to this point I will say, besides it being a little rushed and formulatic were doing pretty good. Its the second half of the movie that really plumates. The second half is just way too predictable and not to mention, which really frustrated the heck out of me, potentially good. And that just kills me, we actually had fiarly interesting plotpoint in part two of the movie, two words, Kikyo Clone. Yes, thats right, they clone Kikyo, and have her fight off Inu yasha while wearing a bunch of heavily plated armour. This could have developed into something very emotional when concerning Inu yasha's character, but the unfortunate thing is the whole thing falls sort of flat, it never really becomes of anything interesting, it comes and goes like a gust in the wind which turns out to be very dissapointing. Also, this really perplexed me actually, basically about three quarters into the movie the whole cast splits up. We have Sango and Miroku together, Kagome and Shippo end up together, and Inu yasha goes off on his own to fight the villains. Now when this all finally gets set into motion we have Sango and Miroku fighting one of the demons on Kirara in the air, Inu Yasha is having his battles as well as Sesshomaru, but then we have Shippo and Kagome, who basically for the last half hour get to engage in the fun-filled educational process of building a raft. Not only is this a completely boring plot point, it often puts the movie at a screeching hault. It just dosn't fit with all the other types of action taking place, it was almost as if the writers had no idea what to do with Shippo, Kagome, or the half demon children, so they just tagged on some lame side diversion. It all just played very loosly. Also while I'm on it, not to be nit picky but the Half Demon children were just a little more than uninteresting. Not that they took alot away from the plot, but it would have been nice if they were just a tiny bit more involving. I have to say, throughout the film I really didn't care too much about what happened to their characters, they pretty much just played out like all the random village children you constantly see sprinkled throughout the series. Now for the series this really isn't too much of a big deal, but for the movie I just felt as though they should have been a little bit more than that. The same goes for the villains as well, they were basically just band of seven clones, that weren't even half as interesting as they were. I swear to god I've never seen a less complex villain in my life, they were completely boring, and showed no signs of depth whatsoever. Another thing, the ending here is really lame, not only is it very tacked on, it gets very corny and it just bored me to tears. Finally, I'm sorry Sesshomaru fans, but Sesshomaru's appearence in the movie was really very out of place. It didn't really need to be there. I felt as though his appearence was just for fan service, and nothing more, which isn't exactly a good thing.
The animation also disspointed me. One aspect that I really liked concerning the first three films was the fact that the character designs veered away from the original. If the characters look a little bit different from the TV series then it sort of creates the illusion that the films are actually more than extended episodes. However they apparently ditched the character designer they had in the first three films, and got the guy from the TV series which I though really brought the film down. Not only did it not look as good it made the movie feel more like an extended episode which dosn't exactly do any favors for it. Also, the ending looked really bad.
So overall, look I know I really brought the film down hard, but it still isn't all bad. It's still fairly entertaining and if you are a hardcore Inu yasha fan I definitely wouldn't hesitate on seeing it. But if your just a casual fan I would maybe try to rent it, or borrow it from someone, because in the longrun for someone who's just a casual fan spending twenty-five bucks on something you might, at the very best, just mildly enjoy is just not worth it. Also the movie is about fifteen minutes shorter than the others were.
Overall grades for movie four:
Plot: C
Animation: B-
Art: B-
Music: B
Voice Acting: B+
Characters: B
