DVD Review: Theologic dogma masquerading as science.

As usual, the "Creationist" hacks are busy displaying their total contempt for truth and their lack of comprehension of the concept of Evolution. They have spent the last century or so manufacturing, counterfeiting, and misinterpreting evidence in a vain and frantic effort to prove that the last 4 billion-odd years of Earth's history never happened. This video set is dedicated to the ludicrous proposition that the existence of unusual animals somehow "proves" that evolution doesn't happen. It even has the temerity to ignore the most unusual animal on the planet (and one of the best documented in terms of its evolution), homo sapiens.
A fundamental problem with the one-sided confrontation between heavyweight Evolution and featherweight "Creationism" is that the difference between the fact of evolution and the theory of Evolution is almost never mentioned. The fact of evolution is that over the very long history of the planet old species have vanished and new species have arisen regularly. This fact was known even before Erasmus Darwin (Charles Darwin's grandfather) coined the term "evolution". Charles, one of the greatest naturalists of his time, after extensive research, published the simple and elegant theory that bears his name. This theory is among the best evidence we have that god doesn't speak only to religious nuts. Of course, the original theory has by now been considerably elaborated (punctuated equilibrium and all that), a fact that the "Creationist" flacks are happy to overlook in their trembling eagerness to discredit Darwinism.
The centerpiece of this latest fit of antiscientific pique is the misrepresentation of the bombardier beetle. This rather noxious bug exists in some 500-odd species divided between 4 genera which use different mechanisms to deliver their chemical blasts. This variation is one of the surest signs of evolutionary development. The claim of "Creationism" is that the bombardier's chemical defense is too complex to have evolved spontaneously (instead of having been designed by some deity with an advanced degree from MIT). The underlying principle of this bogus claim has never been proved - and, in fact, chaos theory supports the probability of spontaneous development of complex systems. In the case of the bombardier, possible evolutionary routes have been worked out - and in the absence of detailed fossil evidence that is an effective riposte. As it happens, close relatives of the bombardiers show rudimentary versions of the bombardier's chemical mechanism ... another sure indication of evolutionary development. Another sure sign that the "Creationists" haven't the foggiest notion what they're talking about is the fact that they frequently misrepresent how the bombardier's chemicals actually work (for instance, that they combine explosively outside the beetle's body, whereas they do so inside - hence the explosive spray).
The rest of the material on these discs tends to be a little more matter-of-fact in terms of interesting (but hardly impossible) characteristics of giraffes, whales, migratory birds, and whatnot. The photography is colorful and there is a good deal of interesting information. Unfortunately, all this is accompanied by the insistent cant about complex characteristics that can't evolve on their own. This is a mere notion, unscientific, undemonstrated, unproven, and untrue. Once the ludicrous nature of this assertion is realized, the entire antiscientific structure of these videos collapses. They succeed only when they preach to (a) the choir and (b) the ignorant.
Evolution is one of the best documented facts about life on Earth. So, for that matter, is the age of the Earth - a fact the Creationists generally love to deny for no good reason. Those who believe the "intelligent design" wrinkle has validity would do well to read Stephen Jay Gould's essay, "The Panda's Thumb". The panda's "thumb" is necessary to deal with its exclusive diet, bamboo. It's an evolutionary afterthought, having developed from a spur of bone in the wrist (an evolution documented by fossil ancestors of the panda). Any "design" half-way "intelligent" would have given the panda a thumb in the first place.
Nor is evolution a theory based only on fossils. In historic times, a flock of starlings (if I recall the type of bird correctly) that isolated itself in an abandoned railway tunnel developed into a new species in about a century. Another documented and historic development is the evolution of a new species from the British Lesser Black-Backed Gull during a circumpolar migration that created interbreeding subspecies until the British Herring Gull, which could interbreed westward along the migration route but not with the original gull to its east.
The present DVD set, far from telling anyone anything true or useful about evolution is merely an exercise in intellectual dishonesty with pretty pictures. For pretty pictures, try National Geographic. For evolution, try Darwin and Gould. As for this ... well, did you ever know a false dogma that didn't make use of pretty pictures?
