DVD Reviews of Incident at Oglala - The Leonard Peltier StoryDVD Review: Incident at Oglala Summary: 3 Stars Overall fairly informative documentary on the Leonard Peltier case, as well as what happened at the Pine Ridge reservation, in June 1973 I believe.
Largely from the native peoples's perspective during the beginning of the film. After about half-way in the film, it switched to an almost entirely legal driven perspective. Focus was on the various charge, allegations, and circumstantial evidence against Mr. Peltier. I was unimpressed by the FBI evidence against Peltier. To be honest, there were so many possible ways this case was not scrutinized carefully enought to convict Leonard Peltier in a proper way.
I do believe that Mr. Peltier's case was not handled properly by the US government, and the Judicial system. The evidence was pretty poor. In any case it was a good film, and enlightened me on possible injustice. Of course, the Judicial system will deny they prosecuted and convicted Mr. Peltier unfairly.
DVD Review: Incident at Oglala Summary: 5 StarsExcellent documentary on this travesty of justice that continues unchecked today. Facts are confirmed. I will view this film again and again.
DVD Review: a reminder of courage and pain Summary: 5 StarsI have read much about this "incident". Some facts might be disputed, however, there is no doubt of the pain and suffering which was prior to this "incident" and which continues to go on. These are real persons in the film and the courage of Leonard Peltier is to be held in the spirit of Crazy Horse. Well worth watching.
DVD Review: Well done Summary: 5 StarsThis is a well done and focused documentary, covering the 1975 shoot out at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I liked the fact that it let those involved on both sides of the case speak for themselves. The editing and cutting of these interviews creates a cohesive and fascinating narrative, capturing the humanity and the internal contradictions in the words of its subjects. While the documentary is sympathetic to the Peltier cause, to its credit, it does not trivialize the death of the two young F.B.I. agents killed during the shoot out. Rather, the interviews are juxtaposed with slow pans showing the faces of the agents who were killed, giving a sense of the sadness of the entire affair, for both sides.
DVD Review: Real history Summary: 5 Starsthis tells the mostly true story of the american indian movememt not the propaganda the government puts out. even if some goals of the movement were not achieved there was at the time a awakening of Indian pride thru the takeover of the town of wounded knee,so. dak. in 1973. that was a scary time in so. dak.
Description of Incident at Oglala - The Leonard Peltier StoryStudio: Lions Gate Home Ent. Release Date: 04/20/2004 Run time: 90 minutes Rating: Pg Robert Redford is the executive producer (and narrator) of this fine, eye-opening documentary about the violent events that took place in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Indian activists ended up in an extended standoff with FBI agents, and the result was several deaths, including two federal men whose killing (according to many people) was never clearly attributed to a specific gunman. Nevertheless, the government laid blame for the tragedy on Leonard Peltier, a Sioux political leader who has long been a focus for supporters believing he took the fall, possibly heroically, for others. Peltier has spent many years in prison, and Apted's film, which is hardly ambiguous in its commitment toward Peltier's hoped-for freedom, is persuasive in both its detail and its case against brutal federal policies toward Indians. Whatever one's position on the Peltier question, this is a compelling piece of work. --Tom Keogh
