DVD Reviews of I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK (Standard Edition) DVDDVD Review: A charming very surrealistic movie! Summary: 5 StarsI was expecting somewhat a more sci-fi movie, but was at first surprised pleasantly that there is nothing garden variety about the movie let alone sci-fi. It involves a main character named Young-goon, vho is a troubled and delusional character who misses and resents her grandmother being taken away to an insane asylum. See's her grandmother in visions trying to tell her her purpouse in life, in messages that either get interrupted or muffled. She is often fancying herself as a cyborg and also fancies a contrarian moral code where sympathy is a mortal sin, that way she can feel free in her delusions to become a complete cyborg and kill the hospital staff she blames for taking away her grandmother, also she eats very little leading her to have no energy and collapse, will only eat pickled radishes and only on constant nudging from fellow patient Il Sun who is one of many rather excentric patients who wears assorted masks with rabbit ears and it ends in a love story that begins drawing Young-gun out. Can't tell more or I feel I give too much away, but the cinematography, the development of the story and the character of Young gun make this movie very watchable.
DVD Review: Im Soo Jung + Rain = Masterpiece Summary: 5 StarsI have to say that Im Soo Jung stole the show but that doesn't lessen the performance Rain gave. I absolutly adore this film. I don't see it as a comedy but it is still a heartwarming love story created in an eccentric environment and if your like me, that makes it a definate score. I love the imagary. This film is more of a piece of art than just entertainment. I highly recommend this film if your into strange characters but can get into the simple storyline, because in the end its just about finding love.
DVD Review: Interesting Depature For Mr. Park Summary: 4 StarsThis is probably the strangest, most irreverent love story I have ever seen. A young girl with an eating disorder (she won't eat because she has delusions about being a cyborg)finds herself at a mental institute where she meets a young man plagued with a strange type of kleptomania (He doesn't just steal random objects but rather abstract ideas like another persons sympathy or niche).
What I found to be so interesting about this film is that, aside from it's boisterous style and humor, their are many subtle allusions and symbols that back up the various themes of the film. For instance, Il-Soon's story about his mother and his fear of vanishing into a dot or several of the idiosyncrasies of Young-Goon's Grandmother (like the scene where she is restricted by a giant rubber band). The film even tries to address the purpose of existence, albeit in a humorous, eccentric fashion.
If your looking for something light and interesting, I would definitely recommend 'I'm A Cyborg, but That's OK'.
DVD Review: Fun, fascinating, and beaufitul Summary: 5 StarsI accidentally found this movie. I knew nothing about it. I was really pleasantly surpirsed amd so enterained. The wild imagination, and the way it was visually portrayed to enhance these fantasies; made this a movie I could totally lose myself in. I don't want to give anything away; but it was truly hilarious, clever, and heart warming.
Some mentally ill are in their own world/stories and sometimes they experienced other patients worlds/stories.
The characters were brillantly portrayed by these fantastic young actor/actresses. I loved seeing things through their eyes, their self-made worlds. Great experience. It's now one of my favorites. It was fun to watch, so creatively done. Also felt like a sweet little love story without being a corny 'chick flick'. Left an impression that had me thinking.
I actually watched again and saw more clues and details. I really recommend this unconventional and uniquely created film with a real powerful meaning laced through it.
DVD Review: A Great Departure Summary: 5 StarsPark Chan-Wook's film is perhaps not what fans of his previous movies might like. However, I found this movie to be a delightful and insightful view of society's rejects, who in their own isolated world are normal in their shared problems. The two leads were wonderful, giving realistic yet whimsical portrayals that bounced well off each other. The visual style reminded me of Michele Gondry's films, with fantastical elements that blended with the norm. I would recommend this film to anyone.
