DVD Reviews of Ice Age (Single-Disc Edition)DVD Review: Enjoy the Cold... Summary: 4 Stars
In a time where computer animated movies seem to come out every other week, to the point where it's hard to know which ones you have seen and which ones you haven't. You almost wonder if any of them are any good. Do any of these movies stand a chance of becoming long-lasting favorites, such as "Toy Story", "Monsters, Inc.", and "Shrek", among moviegoers, and not just the pre-teen ones, or are they merely thrown together by the major studios to compete with one another while offering vary little substance outside of what will entertain kids for roughly 90 minutes. Well, there have been some success stories that have been released recently, though most are watched and then forgotten, but Fox Animation Studios' prehistoric laugh-fest "Ice Age" is one of the best and is sure to become another classic animated comedy joining the ranks of those I listed a moment ago.
"Ice Age" follows the hilarious exploits of Manny (Ray Romano), Sid (John Leguizamo), and Diego (Denis Leary) as they struggle to survive the impending ice age (hence the title) and each other, while they attempt to reunite a lost human baby with his tribe. While all of this is going on, a prehistoric non-talking squirrel named Scrat is attempting to collect all the acorns he can to prepare for the deep freeze; however, this simple task may be too much for this stressed-out little guy to handle.
Fox Animation Studios managed to create not only a hilarious computer animated comedy that will entertain audiences both young and old, but also managed to make one that stands out from the rest of the crowd. The animation is very well done, though not as detailed as some of the competition from studios such as Dreamworks (creators of "Shrek") or Pixar (creators of "Toy Story"), but it is still fun and visually interesting to watch with more of an abstract style than most other animated movies. Featuring a hilarious voice cast, a story that keeps the audience rolling with laughter while still presenting moments of drama that propel the story onward, the creators of "Ice Age" have crafted a heart-warming comedy that the entire family will enjoy and want to watch over and over again.
With all the computer animated movies released today, most are enjoyed by kids, but few are actually enjoyed by adults and teenagers, but it is nice when one comes along that caters to all audiences, and I'm sure the creators of "Ice Age" are happy that it will no doubt be one of the animated classics of our time.
"Ice Age" is rated PG for mildly rude humor.

Description of Ice Age (Single-Disc Edition)They came... they thawed... they conquered the hearts of audiences everywhere in the coolest animated adventure of all time! Heading south to avoid the bad case of global frostbite, a group of migrating misfit creatures embark on a hilarious quest to reunite a human baby with his tribe. Featuring an all-star voice cast, including Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary, ICE AGE is "a pure delight" (New York Daily News) for all ages! Just as A Bug's Life was a computer-animated comedy inspired by Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai, the funny and often enthralling Ice Age is a digital re-imagining of the Western Three Godfathers. The heroes of this unofficial remake (set 20,000 years ago, during the titular Paleolithic era) are a taciturn mastodon named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano), an annoying sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), and a duplicitous saber-toothed tiger, Diego (Denis Leary). The unlikely team encounters a dying, human mother who relinquishes her chirpy toddler to the care of these critters. Hoping, against all odds, to return the little guy to his migrating tribe, Manfred and his associates need to establish trust among themselves, not an easy thing in a harsh world of predators, prey, and pushy glaciers. Audiences that have become accustomed to the rounded, polished, storybook look of Pixar's house brand of computer animation (Monsters, Inc.) will find the blunt edges and chilly brilliance of Ice Age--evoking the harsh, dangerous environment of a frozen world--a wholly different, and equally pleasing, trip. Recommended for ages 4 and up. --Tom Keogh
