DVD Reviews of I Know What I Saw

DVD Review: Believers rejoice! Skeptics bemused!
Summary: 3 Stars

As someone who enthusiastically followed the adventures of Mulder and Scully (and continues to do so through DVD), I find a documentary on UFO enthusiasts looking for answers to be a mixed experience. On one hand, it's not hard (at all) to make a UFO conspiracy theorist look absolutely nuts. They do most of the work for those who want to discredit them. Huge leaps in logic, bushy beards, crazy eyes, and using the rationale "I just know..." is all most people need to write off a UFO enthusiast as they rant. As they recount the time they saw the lights flitting about in space "in a way no aircraft from this world is capable of", they become experts on one topic after another with no real authority or knowledge backing them up. It's the same level of assumption that leads to the formation of religions. People want to believe so badly that they'll take turns in logic to get to where they want the answer to be. It's the reason Mulder's "I Want to Believe" poster became so iconic in the television series, and it's why a History Channel documentary on the subject of UFOs needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Is there alien life out there? Undoubtedly, the odds favor it. The universe is vast, the planets are many, and chances are something else is alive out there. Can they manage intergalactic flight? Do they know there's life on earth? Do they or would they care? It depends on who you ask. People living around Roswell, and Air Force bases seem convinced beyond a doubt. To an extent, this reviewer believes it's possible, but you could say I lack the conviction to go on the record with a televised documentary. Is it hard to explain the strange lights that appear in the desert? Sure. Are the official government answers less than adequate? You bet. Are they hiding something? Could be. Why? Who knows. This is the level of investigation that typically goes in to a History Channel special about theoretical science and mythology. What it does offer is a wide assortment of archived footage and photography accompanied by "experts" and former government officials swearing that there's something else afoot.

The video footage of little white dots flitting about in the sky will certainly intrigue even the most skeptical, as the government would certainly give an answer better than declaring it all a non-incident and sealing away records if they had a comprehensive answer. Or would they? What if it's a piece of technology still in development? There are alternative answers to "It's gotta be a UFO" but no one in this documentary brings it up, because that's not something they want to address. It's a documentary made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. If there's any question to be asked about the footage of mysterious ships in the sky, it's the lack of high-definition footage available. The clips presented in this documentary have the clarity of the famous faked Bigfoot footage and Loch Ness monster photo. There's a level of grain that just we shouldn't have to settle for anymore. Hi-def cameras are available to purchase and operate just like normal cameras. The lack of hi-def footage would either suggest that the people who believe and avidly seek to capture such events aren't in the financial bracket as to afford the higher end technology or....aliens can sense hi-def technology and avoid being caught in glorious 1080p resolution. How clever.

The logic used to enforce belief in UFOs is circular and entirely unconvincing for anyone coming to the table with a belief system outside the one presented here. Just like with any conspiracy theory (JFK, 9/11, etc.) you have to want to see something that may or may not be there, and you have to be even more willing to overlook the chasms that the leaps of logic vault over. If you're already sold on the subject matter, then I Know What I Saw might just be the DVD rallying cry you needed to begin your own lobbying against the White House to release the secret documents which hold the information you know to be the truth. For anyone else, it's an agonizingly long documentary with a few interesting things to say that could easily have been condensed in half the length.

DVD Bonus Features

There's nothing but additional scenes for an already too long documentary.
