DVD Reviews of I Dream of Jeannie - The Complete Fifth SeasonDVD Review: The last Jeannie Summary: 5 StarsThe last season of this great show.
Like the other four seasons it makes you spend hours of laughing on the sofa. Full of strange and funny situations Major Nelson gets in because of Jeannies "helping" hand, romance, a wedding and tons of magic.

DVD Review: Fun show! Summary: 5 StarsThis is the final season of Jeannie. The hijinx continue and the spark is still there for this season. And Tony comes to his senses and marries Jeannie. Although Tony and Roger are still the same characters, Jeannie actually continues her metamorphosis. By the third season (as I wrote in a review), Jeannie is no longer a secret character, but becomes a player in many scenes with other characters. In this season, she's in many more scenes as a major player, and dons her jeannie outfit just to remind us that she is a jeannie (a word of warning--Barbara Eden as a platinum blonde is absolutely gorgeous and seeing her in the attire of the times--mini skirts--could be dangerous for young males). Jeannie has even bought into Tony's fear of having anyone discover their secret. At the wedding scene, she seems more afraid of dicovery than Tony.
Well, this was the final season. Could it have gone on any longer? Well, maybe. The writers probably could have come up with other inane storylines, but now that Tony and Jeannie are married, they certainly would have had children. Comparisons with Bewitched would have become more acute. We were given a glimpse of what the show would have developed into in an earlier season when Tony wonders whether their kids would be normal or jeannies. They're jeannies, of course. It was nothing but Jeannie running around chasing her bratty kids. Thank goodness we were mercifully spared such nonsense. No, it was probably a good time for the show to end.
One final thought on I Dream of Jeannie. Is there any value to this show, besides the simple entertainment value? Well, yes. Maybe it gives the viewer cause to reflect on is own nature. Tony is so unbelievably restrained in what he asks Jeannie to do. But the few times when Roger controls her, he sets himself up better than the Shah of Iran and he always suggests that he and/or Tony get the pleasures of the world beyond their wildest dreams. The question is "what would you do--show restraint and wisdom or become a selfish, unbridled hedonist?"
DVD Review: I Dream of Jeannie The Complete Fifth Season Summary: 5 StarsThis is a great show and it was sent to me in a very timely manner
Description of I Dream of Jeannie - The Complete Fifth SeasonThe last magical season with Jeannie! The mayhem continues when Jeannie has to choose between being Tonys wife or being the queen of a country. Against Tonys wishes, Roger and Dr. Bellows plan a bachelor party for him. At the wedding, Jeannie and Tony try to figure out how to avoid photos since genies dont show up in pictures. The most beloved midriff on television finally went off the air, but the last season of I Dream of Jeannie was just as enjoyably silly as ever. Ever-helpful and virtually all-powerful Jeannie (Barbara Eden) turn her beloved astronaut Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) into a concert pianist and a pool shark; a magic cream turns Mrs. Bellows (Emmaline Henry) into a completely different woman; magic dog Djinn Djinn and his "wife" are about to have puppies, but everyone thinks it's Jeannie who's pregnant; when a hotel is full, Jeannie gives it a new floor. But of course the big event of this season is the wedding: Tony and Jeannie finally get married, thus domesticating the show's classic male fantasy... though truly, there's no more hint of sex between the leads after the wedding than there was before it. In fact, it's surprising the show began to lose popularity; there's practically no difference between stand-alone episodes before the wedding and after it. The most enjoyable episodes of the fifth season are actually the ones setting up the wedding, which give the show a sense of momentum and richer character relationships that standard episodes, fun though they may be, usually lack. Mind you, this is still I Dream of Jeannie, not Six Feet Under--Tony's decision to marry Jeannie after resisting for so long happens without much soul-searching--but it still adds just a hint of narrative depth. Other pleasures this season include Eden's parade of groovy short-skirted outfits; brief supporting appearances by Farrah Fawcett, Dick Van Patten, and others; and the ever-dependable weaselly behavior of Roger (the ever-dependably great Bill Dailey), the show's crucial ingredient. I Dream of Jeannie was never a groundbreaking sitcom like Roseanne or Seinfield; it had a goofy but clear premise and mined it for predictable but also dependable humor. For fans, all five seasons will reward their devotion. --Bret Fetzer
