DVD Review: Enjoyable but morbid little Horror from producer Herman Cohen.
Summary: 3 Stars
"Horrors of the Black Museum(1959)" is one grim little picture. The film tells the story of a writer(Michael Gough) who needs inspirations for his novels and articles on murder and crime by committing several himself and baffling Scotland Yard in the process.
The murders are gruesome and eerie including the infamous "binoculars with the spikes" segment that serves to open the story. The acting is half decent even if most of the characters are one note. Gough is a first rate scenery chewer and makes an excellent madman, bringing equal doses of creepiness and humor to his role whether it be devising a new torture, fighting with a busty blonde or killing an old lady with an ice pick, the actor appears in his element.
Gough's manipulation of his young assistant to commit murder is highly reminiscent of several 40s Horror pictures notably "The Mad Ghoul(1943)" which the makeup design appeared so much similar to.
The introduction to the film is humorous enough featuring a hypnotist by the name of "Emile Franchill" who talks a load of B.S. for almost fifteen minutes introducing us to something called "Hypnovista" which sipposedly makes us part of the action. It dosen't.
The film is featured in widesreen and seemingly in the correct aspect ratio and the print is somewhat muddy but for only a few bucks this appears quite impressive. Cheezy Fliks also includes several trailers for other releases on this DVD and some inserts from the Drive In days.
Fans of this kind of schlock will be most amused with this delightful piece of 50s trash.
