DVD Review: police show for the thinker
Summary: 5 Stars
Having had first-hand experience observing the personal and professional dynamics of a major police force, "Homicide" failed to produce the jaded attitude I experience with most police stories. I loved this show because it consistently exhibited the frailities of the human condition without being maudlin. Everyone made mistakes and no excuses were made for them; police perform a difficult job and a constant diet of observing the lowest of the human denominator and often macabre situations will ultimately change anyone. Homicide makes this subtle point clear. One of the most powerful episodes was called "Shades of Gray." It came a little later in the series but I don't think I have ever viewed a show that involved the complexities racial tension juxtaposed against a fatal human error in which no harm was actually intended. A Jamaican woman was hit by a city bus driven by a white bus driver and the community was ready to react in outrage when police determined it was an accident. The woman rode this bus every day and was friendly with the driver. An extremely unfortunate incident but one that often happens in everyday life. Everything that happens is not always what it seems to be; "Homicide" writers were excellent at delving deeper into "gray" areas in which there is no right or wrong. We are forced to admit we just don't know why something happened. More than many police shows "Homicide" showed real life without glossing over the real issues.DVD Review: Great but far from perfect

I'll keep this review super short and explain why this collection deserves 4 and not 5 stars:
The first 3-4 episodes are rough, and don't flow very well. There are some cliches and stereotypes that you find in a lot of TV cop dramas. A few scenes brought eye rolls, and made me think, "Hmm, I have a feeling the 'network' threw that bit in to make it more popular for the 'masses'." Thankfully those scenes disappeared after awhile; the episodes on the 3rd and 4th DVDs are superb and top-notch. The writing is much stronger and flows better, the cliches are gone, and the acting is strong throughout the series.
DVD Review: It's Criminal To Release This Fine Series Without Close Captioning

I love everything about the TV series HOMICIDE from its well realized characters to the Baltimore portrayed so realistically you can almost smell and taste it. Unfortunately I missed most of the early episodes and am delighted to be able to finally view the initial seasons on DVD. Happily, the early episodes are as excellent as those that followed but the DVDs cry out for close captioning even for those of us with normal hearing. The dialogue is too well written to miss a word and with the thick Baltimore (and other) accents of many of the characters I missed some whole sentences and maybe paragraphs! Hopefully maybe a re release with English close captioning will be forthcoming?????DVD Review: Great selection

Inspired by David Simon's Edgar Award-winning account of Baltimore homicide detectives and brought to television by writer Paul Attanasio (Gideon's Crossing) and director Barry Levinson (Analyze This, The Perfect Storm, Oz), Homicide boasted a powerhouse ensemble cast featuring Ned Beatty (Network, Deliverance), Yaphet Kotto (Alien, Midnight Run), Richard Belzer (Law & Order: SVU), and breakout star Andre Braugher (Frequency, Gideon's Crossing). Now this Emmy and Peabody Award winner debuts on DVD with this collector's set featuring all 13 episodes from the first two seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street.Homicide: Life on the Street was always ahead of its time. As this collection of the first two seasons proves--it still is. Crime dramas that have thrived on cable, like The Sopranos, have benefited from the ground Homicide broke--and inherited many of the talents (like Edie Falco) that made it great. To NBC's credit, particularly then-president and fan Warren Littlefield, it supported the show for seven years, despite several cast changes and lukewarm ratings. Fortunately, critics were enthusiastic from the start and fans were loyal. Awards would roll in, too, culminating in a richly deserved Emmy for Andre Braugher (Frank Pembleton).
Homicide was based on the book by David Simon and created by Paul Attanasio (Quiz Show), Tom Fontana (Oz), and Barry Levinson (Diner). It was filmed in Levinson's beloved Charm City and he directed several episodes, including "Gone for Goode," which introduced the case of Adena Watson (and won another Emmy). It would haunt Tim Bayliss (the underrated Kyle Secor) for the rest of the series. The authentic Maryland locations, unusual cases (many based on real-life incidents), groundbreaking camera work, edgy--often humorous--dialogue, and seemingly improvised acting set Homicide apart from everything on TV. Then there were the directors, like Nick Gomez ("Son of a Gun") and Alan Taylor ("A Dog and Pony Show"), and guest stars, like Gwen Verdon ("A Ghost of a Chance") and Robin Williams ("Bop Gun"). Could this really be network TV? Most times, it didn't feel like it. These 13 episodes present the main characters: Lieutenant Al "Gee" Giardello (Yaphet Kotto), Kay Howard (Melissa Leo), Meldrick Lewis (Clark Johnson), and John Munch (Richard Melzer), whose character would segue to Law & Order: SVU. Ned Beatty, Daniel Baldwin, and Jon Polito also make vivid impressions, but would not remain for the long haul. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
