This movie is notable for the artistic restraint with which master director Vincente Minnelli treats its highly charged melodramatic material. Restraint, the loving, sympathetic treatment of each protagonist (even as they clash with one another), and one of the most haunting, moving film scores ever composed (by Bronlislau Kaper), raises Home from the Hill to the level of tragedy. The big murder scene may be the most restrained and artistic of any Hollywood film ever. We never see the actual murder, only a screen door swinging, the victim at his moment of triumph turning to face his killer, and then the gunshot as heard by others on a different floor. Minnelli's use of composition and placing of furniture in front of the fallen victim, who is wedged against the wall in the rear of the frame, creates a powerful feeling of pathos. This is true film artistry -- without having to gross out the audience, which would have the effect of making most of us distance ourselves from the horror. In short, this film has all the artistry that is rare indeed in films today, including those of "masters" like Martin Scorsese. The final scene, with Minnelli's dramatic composition of the shot as the music reaches its climax, is magnificent.
