DVD Review: Holly Hobbie: A Preschool Girl's Favorite Then and Now
Summary: 5 Stars
Back in the 70's, I was way into Holly Hobbie, so I was pretty excited to see her Great-Granddaughter with the same name (even though she's on the maternal side, if you figure that one out, explain it to me, please) making a come back. My preschool aged daughters love this movie and have taken to even creating Hay Girls adventures on their own. Quite frankly it's a nice respite from all the Disney Princesses. Holly is a normal every day girl just like them and that's refreshing in the face of a lot of little girl's entertainment.
The story revolves around Holly's trip from the city to small-town Clover for her Aunt Jessie's birthday party. Holly and her Clover friends help to plan the party and to play tricks on Holly's younger alien-obsessed brother. All the characters are enjoyable and interesting. There are no country hick types here. Aunt Jessie runs a pie shop and hipster Uncle Dave eats all her pies when not practicing with his band. Holly sings a couple songs, giving this a modern edge. The songs are perfect for little girls to sing over an over again (as mine do). The messages of sisters and friendship...and gluttony too, I guess (Aunt Jessie plays a trick on her pie-crazy husband) are treated as story-line, not preaching. It's really just wonderful girly entertainment all around.

Dressing in jeans, and sporting long, permed hair and a cool bike, Holly is a far cry from her homely relative who has long been adored for her country-style calico dresses and her ability to bake great cakes. In this episode, Holly is invited to her Aunt's birthday party, so she wants to learn how to make a cake. She takes baking lessons, in between nightly excursions during which she cuts fake crop circles in the neighbor's corn patch to trick her little brother into believing in aliens. Pranks continue until a guilt-ridden Holly confesses her dishonesty to Robbie, her brother, and her mother. As Holly seeks familial harmony and a sense of domesticity, she finds a treasure chest containing her great-grandma's memorabilia. Holly's rebellious feelings melt away as she discovers that her elder Holly also loved to party. In the end, the cake she makes is awesome and Holly is proud of both her heritage and of herself. Surprise Party seems made for little girls whose use of technology sets them apart from previous generations, but ladies who grew up with the original Holly Hobbie will prefer her humble pioneer look as a reminder of how much times have changed.
