DVD Reviews of High School Musical (Encore Edition)

DVD Review: The Phantom Crap
Summary: 1 Stars

Kids these days, they'll get sucked into anything. I remember back in my day, when "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" was around, that was something to get hyped about. In this cliched, abysmal piece of garbage we are treated to (current) stereotypical high-school characters; the white jock, the "ethnic" jock and "smart" girls, the white "rich" snobby girl and her "is-he-or-isn't-he" brother. The songs aren't catchy whatsoever and can be seen coming ten miles (or more) away. The choreography is mediocre at best (and that's the nicest phrase I could think of). The acting wooden, Hayden Christensen had better acting in "Star Wars" (I don't even like that guy!)Also the character development (or lack there of). The feel and attitude of the two main characters at the beginning is the same at the end. So the characters learn absolutely nothing except all of your high school problems can be resolved if everyone gets into a big chorus number and remembers that (God kill me for this) "we're all in this together". Sure, yeah right. My high school was nothing like this.

DVD Review: "Something New," "We're All In This Together." Great Storyline, Catchy & Heartwarming Songs And Family Fun Courtesy Of Disney.
Summary: 5 Stars

Having seen a bit of "High School Musical 2" on TV (and loved it), I was fortunate enough to be able to watch this excellent movie for free (my mom probably wouldn't let me buy this film, saying "It's a kiddie movie, you're too old for those and, besides, it's for girls." From the first frame of film and the song "Something New," I was immediately hooked. Ashley Tisdale showed dynamic range in this film, as she played the sweet Maddie Fitzpatrick on "The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody" and on an episode of "The Suite Life On Deck" (I hope they bring her back for more episodes) and a real drama queen/G-rated diva here. I don't know the lyrics to any of the songs, so I mostly danced to them (and did so BADLY; it's a miracle I didn't break anything or knock anyone over). This film is designed for all ages, so get out your dancing shoes and get ready to fall in love, sing and dance because "We're All In This Together." Rated G. GO WILDCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DVD Review: What's Not To Like About This Charming Film?!
Summary: 4 Stars

The other night, having nothing else to do, I popped in the DVD of High School Musical just to see what the "fuss" is all about (My younger sister owns the HSM dolls, clothes, towels, movies, CDs, video games, sheet music, etc). Though not usually drawn to the musical genre or Disney Channel dramatic fare, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this film held my interest and entertained me for its duration.

Plot-wise, HSM doesn't deviate too far from standard Disney programming. When new girl to school Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) begins to form a relationship with school beau Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), it draws the ire of popular girl Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) and facilitates an overhaul of East High's social cliques.

What sets the storyline apart from, say, a typical episode of Hannah Montana, though, is the way the school stereotypes are portrayed. Instead of getting too preachy, Disney instead wildly accentuates those stereotypes and lets the simple messages of diversity and acceptance speak for themselves. Troy is the All-American boy every girl has a crush on, Gabriella is the stunningly beautiful girl next door, and Sharpay is the over-the-top princess who rules the school with her status.

Of course, HSM needs to (as a musical) ultimately be judged on the quality of its musical numbers...the category in which it succeeds fantastically. From the very beginning, when a karaoke DJ hands microphones to Troy and Gabriella and tells them "you might thank me for this someday", viewers will realize the quality of the musical numbers about to come. Though Efron does not provide his own vocals, he IS able to adroitly portray the conflicted Troy (basketball vs. singing) through acting and dance. Hudgens' tunes are usually softer, but very poignant ("When There Was Me And You", in which Hudgens flies solo, is my favorite piece in the film), while Tisdale is probably the most talented actor/singer/dancer of the bunch in her fantastically choreographed and special effects-laden numbers.

So, if you are a parent/older sibling who wants to know what make your child/younger sibling go crazy over HSM, I would encourage you to sit down and watch this film (preferably with them). Even the most jaded critics will be humming (or outright belting) the catchy melodies long after the end credits roll.

DVD Review: How Can You Give This Movie A Bad Rating?
Summary: 5 Stars

As an adult, I find the movie/series enjoyable and love all three HSM for what they are supposed to be - fun movies for kids. Disney is not in the buisness of making the next great Oscar winner; the intent here was to make a movie that children and teens would find funny and love. The movies were never intended to please adults, so what is with all the bad ratings for a movie that has a wildly loyal teen fanbase?

Yes, HSM is cheesy, obvious, and innocent - which was the intent of Disney in order to appeal to a certain age group. Here, we have everything children and teens could want in a movie - goofy jokes, fun songs, cool dance numbers, and the next big young hearthrob in Zac Efron. Parents will approve because, well, there is nothing to disapprove of in this series.

This is a movie made for kids and kids love it. That's the bottomline.

DVD Review: Don't knock it if you haven' seen it
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm fed up with people raging over the High School Musical franchise as if it's the worst thing that has happened to tweens since the dawn of time. Honestly, the original High School Musical is a fun, family film that most people with an open mind will enjoy. Sure, it's cheesy, it's campy, it's corny. But at least we are spared an '80s school where everyone is picked on and no one can make a D. No swearing, no sex, no drugs. Isn't this what we've all been looking for?
Troy Bolton, basketball captain of East High, meets a shy Gabriella Montez, the math genius, at a karaoke party and just a few days later discovers she's moved right into his neighborhood. Unbelievable? Yes. But with a sense of suspended belief, just about anyone can enjoy this film. I was skeptical myself, when I first heard about it, but after one viewing I realized why it had gained such a following. I've had about ten of my close friends watch it (force in some cases), and although most were wary, everyone came out admitting that it wasn't nearly as bad as they were expecting.
The Blu-Ray disc offers the film (for the first time) in widescreen. It actually adds a lot to the movie. Bonus features include "Sing Along" and "Dance Along", a making-of feature, and several music videos.
As wonderful as the first High School Musical is, the other two films in the "trilogy" are not as easy to recommend. While enjoyable, they struggle as sequels are prone to do.
Take a chance on the film. Really. You'll probably enjoy it.

The Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical is a combination of backstage action and Grease without the unwholesome habits. Scoring record ratings at the time of its January 2006 broadcast, it's a smash hit with tween audiences (ages 6 to 10), but appealing for all ages. At a New Year's Eve party, Troy (Zac Efron of the WB's Summerland) has a chance meeting with Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) when they share a karaoke song. Lo and behold, when school resumes, they discover that Gabriella has just transferred to Troy's East High School, a campus divided into tight cliques of jocks, cheerleaders, brainiacs, and skater dudes. Eager to recapture the magic they'd discovered during karaoke, Troy and Gabriella consider auditioning for the school's upcoming musical, much to the dismay of the school's frost queen/theater goddess, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody). Problem is, Troy is also the star of the basketball team and Gabrielle is being recruited to compete in the Scholastic Decathlon. Will they give up their cliques to start something new, or will they do as the show's first big anthem urges and "Stick to the Status Quo"? Well, this is a Disney movie, so maybe the sacrifices won't be that hard, and even the hints of romance are mild.

The bestselling soundtrack is catchy in that Disney-pop kind of way, mixing in a dash of hip-hop ("Getcha Head in the Game," punctuated by squeaky basketball shoes and other sound effects), salsa ("Bop to the Top"), and the endearingly hammy ("What I've Been Looking For" performed by Sharpay and her brother, Ryan, played by Lucas Grabeel). It's not hard to imagine High School Musical becoming a semi-staple for high school groups to perform themselves. DVD bonus features include sing-along subtitles; a 9-minute featurette discussing casting, recording sessions, and rehearsals; a multi-angle look at a rehearsal of "Bop to the Top"; and music videos for "We're All in This Together" and a song that didn't make it into the final film, "I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," performed by Efron, Hudgens, Tisdale, and Gabreel. --David Horiuchi
