DVD Reviews of Hide and Seek (Widescreen Edition)DVD Review: Another Pointless "Thriller" Summary: 2 Stars
Before I start my review I would like to ask a simple question, and that is why do movies suck so bad these days? Over the past week I have rented the movie "White Noise" starring Michael Keaton "Cursed" starring Christina Ricci, and now "Hide and Seek" starring Robert DeNiro. Do you want to know what all of these movies had in common?.....They all were Horrible!. But this review is about the movie "Hide and Seek" so I will focus on that.
1. Acting: The Acting in Hide and Seek is not bad at all and Dakota Fanning is very creepy and dark as Emily in this film, Deniro is also great as the psycologist father David who seems to be desperately trying to figure out what is wrong with his daughter. Famke Jansen, Elizabeth Shue, The sheriff, the couple next door, and even the guy who plays the real estate agent are all good so that earned this movie one star for acting.
2. Plot: "You mean we have to come up with a story too" that is what it seemed like the writters said when they made this film. I say this because there is so much pointless material in this film that by the time you get to the "shock ending" you will be so angry that this movie completely didnt add up to any of the suspense that it built up. The story is bascially set up like this: David's (Robert Deniro) wife kills herself at the start of the movie, in order to help his daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning) cope with her death he moves them out in the middle of nowhere (yeah take the girl away from all the rest of her friends as well thats a good idea!), immediately Emily begins to act depressed and spaced until one day she tells her dad that she has a new friend named Charlie, now this is where the story starts to get interesting because it makes you think that Charlie might be a supernatural force like a ghost or maybe even a creature living in Emily's closet but to everybody who has not seen "Hide and Seek" yet let me warn you "HIDE AND SEEK IS NOT A GHOST MOVIE AND IT IS NOT A HORROR MOVIE" so after Charlie is introduced a lot of wierd events begin to happen like dead cats in the tub, windows in Emily's room that David could not open are "magically" opened the next day, even a poor innocent woman is thrown out the window by an unseen force from the closet, there are even creepy neighbors who have have several erie scenes but all of these things are pointless when the ultimate secret is revealed and the whole ending ammounts to nothing but some cheap dialog and 15 minutes of boring scenes which totally rip off from "The Shining" and "Secret Window" if you have seen those movies you probaly have guessed the ending and I dont care about spoiling that because you cant spoil something that is already bad. I was so dissapointed with this film that I watched all of the four alternate endings on the DVD and trust me they are no better then the real ending.
3. DVD Quality: Well the DVD is great in format, and the menu screen is well done, the sound is not that great and like a lot of DVDS the dialog can barely be heard but the music is super loud, this usually has be turning the volume up and down but luckily there is not a lot of music in this movie so you can leave it on a steady audio most of the time. But I give this DVD one star just for the creepy menu and option screens.
4. DVD Features: "Oh you want us to actually explain this movie too!" that has to be what the Director and the screenwritters must have been thinking when they did the commentary for Hide and Seek. One key thing about what we see David doing when Charlie is around is explained and actually made sense, but several other scenes like the pointless ones I was telling you about are ignored and instead of explaining these scenes the Director spends about eight scenes total ranting about how he met Robert Deniro and how good Dakota Fanning is. We know how good Dakota Fanning is and we dont care about how you met Deniro so tell us something we dont know. So if you are looking for the director to actually explain the story then FORGET IT, he says one thing that made me realize how lazy he is and thats when he says "If a guy is a nut job do filmakers really have to explain why hes a nut job" the answer is Yes. The deleted scenes are boring and it was good thiking to delete them. The four alternate endings really dont difer much from one another and they will not change your feelings about the movie. I didnt watch the "Making Of Hide and Seek" because by that time I was so annoyed with this film that I could care less about how it was made.
In conclusion I am very angry with Hollywood for coming out with one crappy movie after another, and then they wonder why the cinemas sales have declined so much. Because people are sick of spending eight dollars for a movieticket and 20 dollars on a small coke and medium popcorn to see crap like Hide and Seek. This movie SUCKS BIG TIME and I know that you will probaly watch it anyway just to see if you will like it, but trust me you wont, and if you must see this movie please RENT IT, I could only imagine what I would have done with this movie if I had purchased it, Do I hear coaster anyone?

Description of Hide and Seek (Widescreen Edition)Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning keep pulses pounding and hearts racing in this chilling horror hit about a troubled father and daughter tormented by someone ? or something ? named Charlie, a malevolent entity who may or may not be "imaginary" but is definitely the stuff nightmares are made of! Dakota Fanning--the elfin star of Uptown Girls, The Cat in the Hat, and Man on Fire--trades in her blond locks for a semi-gothic brunette do in Hide and Seek. Fanning plays Emily, a young girl whose mother commits suicide. To help Emily through the trauma, her father David (Robert DeNiro), a psychologist, takes her to an isolated house in upstate New York. But instead of healing, Emily gets dark circles under her eyes, mutilates her favorite doll, and develops an imaginary friend named Charlie. In no time at all, things get spooky and David suspects this imaginary friend isn't so friendly. Hide and Seek owes a lot to The Shining, but whether the creepiness is borrowed or not, there's a decent dose of it (though the twist at the end is unlikely to surprise many viewers). DeNiro does his job with professional gloss, but Fanning carries the movie; she's got the kind of charisma that goes beyond acting ability--that ineffable glow that makes an audience want to watch her. Hide and Seek also features Famke Janssen (X-Men), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), and the ever-dependable Dylan Baker (Happiness). --Bret Fetzer
