DVD Reviews of Heaven & Hell: Live from Radio City Music Hall

DVD Review: BLACK SABBATH: "The mkII 82 & 92 Reunion Revolution Revelation!!"
Summary: 5 Stars

1980 was a great year for Black Sabbath, heavy metal, and hard rock fans everywhere when they released their classic "Heaven and Hell" lp, the first with vocalist Ronnie James Dio (formerly of Rainbow). It was an Earth shattering sound created by They Who Create Music. But, things would only get better as they may have 1st appeared to be going, drummer Bill Ward leaving midway through the tour because of alcohol, drug, and personal problems. However, this, in my opinion, was when the "Dio-Sabbath" era of Black Sabbath was born. Vinnie Appice is, was, and always shall remain to be the ONLY 4th member of the band that ever had just as much talent AND charisma. His style of drumming has inspired countless HM drummers everywhere before, during, and since. I WAS inspired by him! I see and hear it (his drum sound) in a LOT of good newer bands (Metallica, Godsmack, System Of A Down, Alice In Chains, etc., etc.), but no matter how good they all are (and they ARE!), the throne of being Black Sabbath's drummer is HIS! They've had some great drummers since then, and even Bill Ward is one of the greatest ever (in the league of Bonham and Moon), Vinnie took from those styles (as well as Neil Peart of RUSH, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, his own sound from Rick Derringer's 'Derenger', and created the most ultimate drum sound ever. Oh, yeah, don't forget to add a touch of Nigel Olsson (Elton John Band). When Black Sabbath released "Mob Rules" in 81, with Appice on drums, it was like discovering the greatest album since Sabbath's 1st three. They followed the studio release up with a 'live' one in the double-cd "Live Evil" (1982), but as much as we fans loved it, we hated it. It was the "Titanic" of live hard rock albums. The things that plagued this were such reprehesnsible follies that should make one question this band's ego's and IQ's; and, how could Iommi & Butler NOT see how this was gonna effect fans and backlash on them? First, they kept holding the record back, pushing the release date further and further ahead. Then, they dropped a bombshell: Dio and Appice had been fired from Black Sabbath! THEN the record was released.
It was kind of hard to enjoy a new product from your favorite band when and/or if your favorite band are NO MORE! Especially a LIVE product!! Then, to make matters worse, the crediting on the back of the album condensed Sabbath into a 3-piece band: Ronnie Dio (the 'James' was ommited)-vocals, Tony Iommi - guitar, Geezer Buter - bass. BAD call when Sabbath had ALWAYS been seen as a 4 piece band! And, then to credit Vinnie Appice in the special thanks section??? OUCH!! How immature could Iommi/Butler be???! Yes, Geoff Nichols' (keyboards) name was before VA's!
And, the people, as I said, that were hurt the most, were 'the band'...Black Sabbath...NOT RJ Dio and/or Vinnie Appice, nor Iommi and Butler, BUT Black Sabbath...it was the END for Black Sabbath for a LOT of their fans. I, for one, have been a fan of all era's of their career, but this is personally my most 'personal', my favorite. Their best!?!?
In 1992, Black Sabbath mkII (Appice/Butler/Dio/Iommi) reunited and released the awesome classic "Dehumanizer" (which almost didn't happen with Vinnie Appice, they were gonna keep Cozy Powell, but Powell had an accident, and had to step aside). I couldn't picture anyone else drumming with Dio singing. So, that worked out for all of us when this version of Black Sabbath (the line-up that Ozzy Osbourne refers to as 'Geezer Butler & The Three Italians') reunited, released a new album, then toured...Only to end with Dio leaving the band at the end of the road, leaving two sets to be covered (which Sabbath brought in Rob Halford and it was phenominal).
Sabbath made a few more studio cd's (and a live one) during the 90's, eventually even getting the "Tyr' line-up together for 95's "Forbidden", the final Sabbath studio cd. Then, in 1997, Black Sabbath surprised the world with a reunion of the original line-up of Black Sabbath on cd ("Reunion") and DVD ("The Last Supper"). And, since then, Sabbath have been doing Ozzfest every year as that version of the band.
Well, just last year (2007), Vinnie Appice, Geezer Butler, Ronnie James Dio, and Tony Iommi did the darndest thing: They reunited the 82 Dio-era version of Sabbath yet again, this time calling the band Heaven And Hell.
Under the Sabbath banner, there is a new cd, Black Sabbath "The Dio Era", which features three new songs on it. And, touring to support that, they have released this DVD Heaven And Hell "Live At Radio City Music Hall".
This is the masterpiece of music and cinema de concerto we've ALL been waiting for (and, a shout out to my bud in blood, Clint Bronson, guess what...NO Ozzy era songs!!). This is a concert experience to be had by one and all! Treat this like it's Kubrick's 'Heaven & Hell - Live @ Radio City Music Hall', for this is SO Goth, SO 'Dungeons & Dragons', SO mystical, SO great! Everything that They were in 82, 92, and in between, they are now 10-fold! For a small hint, here is a glance at the songlist:
1. E5150/After All (The Dead)
2. The Mob Rules
3. Children Of The Sea
4. Lady Evil
5. I
6. The Sign Of The Southern Cross
7. Voodoo
8. The Devil Cried*
9. Computer God
10. Falling Off The Edge Of The World
11. Shadow Of The Wind*
12. Die Young
13. Heaven And Hell
14. Lonely Is The Word
15. Neon Knights
Mixing in two new songs, H&H set the stage on fire, and tromple it underfoot like a dinosaur thrashing through the ole boneyard at Midnight. A cross between Rainbow, and the best of the Dio era stuff (which I'm hoping they will do a 'sequel' to this, for there are SO many other great songs from this version of the band...But, I feel this does everything GREAT justice!). This is what "Live Evil' was SUPPOSED to sound like (I thought they sounded better live in 92 than they did in 82, and I even SAW them live in 82 -best concert I have ever seen!). In other words, they sound better than ever here, especially allowing fans to concentrate on this band's music (it sounds just as dark, if not darker, than a LOT of older Black Sabbath -Ozzy era- music ever could).
Ronnie sounds like he did in his Rainbow days at times, then turns around and sounds as gruff as he did during the 80's and 90's. The two new songs are awesome! Yes, the new song titles are a bit 'simple', but there are some really mean 'BS' work there, very dark and moody, sinister and heavy.
Filmed brilliantly and vibrantly, this film concert will blow you away! Call them what you may, be it Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi's Earth, Geezer & The 3 Italians, just know it's your favorite band back from the dead, ready to channel it away. So very brooding! Bow to the shadow of the wind!
"8 miles high and about to fall, and no one there to catch you...Look for the Sign, the Time, the Sign of the Southern Cross."
PS: By the way, I want to stress to fans that "Sign of the Southern Cross" (& "Falling Off The Edge Of The World") are played in their full intirety. That's right, no teasing us with just enough of it to wish they hadn't even bothered (anyone remember the criminally short "Sign Of The Southern Cross" on "Live Evil"???). Shehamforish...Nema!
Thank you! ;-)
