This is the fourth available DVD at Amazon of Haydn's 'The Creation' ('Die Schöpfung') and is in my opinion the best of them for a number of reasons. Coming a close second is the Bernstein DVD Leonard Bernstein: Haydn - Die Schopfung, which certainly has Bernstein's exciting approach -- he was, after all, reliably but rather surprisingly, a magnificent Haydn conductor -- but it's an old-fashioned, romantically conceived performance in somewhat dated sight and sound and with somewhat less impressive musical forces than those seen and heard here. Although this Muti 'Creation' came only four years later in 1990, it is recorded in superior fashion, with excellent sound and wonderful visuals, by Austrian television, an organization whose filmed classical music efforts lead the pack as far as I'm concerned.
The performance is recorded live at the 1990 Salzburg Festival from the Grosses Festspielhaus. The Vienna Philharmonic (with appropriately reduced Classical size) and Vienna State Opera Choir, both in tip-top form, are joined by five absolutely first-rate soloists, all in marvelous voice:
Gabriel & Eva: soprano Lucia Popp (who also appears on the Bernstein DVD)
Uriel: tenor Francisco Araiza
Raphael: bass Samuel Ramey
Adam: baritone Olaf Bär
Alto soloist: Iris Vermillion
The latter is luxury casting as the alto soloist, heard only in the solo quartet of the final chorus, is generally from the chorus.
I would not have thought of Riccardo Muti as a first-choice conductor of Haydn but he certainly makes a believer of me with this performance. Tempi are crisp, even joyous. There is sensitive shaping of musical phrases within a clear overall conception. There is drama aplenty and even moments of humor -- this is Haydn after all -- as in Bär's conception of Adam before the Fall.
Parts I, II & III are performed without any intermission. It is no surprise that the Salzburg audience sounds rapturous at the work's conclusion.
