DVD Reviews of Having Your Baby! A Complete Lamaze Prepared Childbirth ClassDVD Review: Say it with me now, "saunta-meter".... lol Summary: 3 StarsI had previously been looking on Amazon at DVDs such as this one to buy, as I do not plan on attending childbirth classes. This was one of the DVDs I had on my short list, as it had been referenced in other sources as a prominent series on the subject.
Luckily I got a chance to rent it from my local library, and just finished watching. Yep -- like everyone said, it was probably filmed in the 80s. Definitely not an extensive look into the subjects it covers, and yes - what it does cover with regards to procedures is pretty outdated. It is however, truly like being in a lamaze class - very real time, paced for viewers to be an extension of the class being filmed and to participate in the breathing exercises shown.
If you are looking for a lamaze class DVD alternative, this would be your up your alley. I can't imagine the breathing techniques have changed very much since this was filmed, so its age wouldn't really be much of a factor. Now if I could just figure out why they kept pronouncing centimeter as "saunta-meter" through the whole thing... lol.
DVD Review: Surprisingly OLD Summary: 3 StarsFor being so highly recommended, the video is older than me, probably over 30 years? Good information, but really, really old.
DVD Review: So 1980s... Summary: 1 StarsWe were very surprised to receive a video that predates the CD, let alone DVD. Content was old and outdated. Some of the medications discussed are no longer in use anymore. We purchased the video because all the birthing classes in our area are full and wouldn't take us, and we were left disappointed by this ancient video once we finished laughing about the wardrobe and music selections.
DVD Review: Having Your Baby! Summary: 5 StarsMy niece is having a baby and my sister, her mother, has passed away. My niece is low income and could not afford lamaze classes and this was a great way for her and I to practice lamaze at home. It also helped for her to continue to watch the DVD over and over for her own reassurance and practice, when I was not available. The baby is due this week, but I can say that for the last four days the video has incredibly helped my niece to labor at home and not make false runs to the hospital. I wish I had this video when I had my children!
DVD Review: Very helpful and informative for childbirth prep Summary: 4 StarsWe purchased this video because we were unable to locate a local lamaze class. Our childbirth class did not go into great detail on specific techniques for breathing/relaxation during labor. This DVD, although filmed a while back, was very helpful in instructing us in how to adequately prepare and practice for our new little one's arrival.
Description of Having Your Baby! A Complete Lamaze Prepared Childbirth ClassProduct Description If you can't attend a prepared childbirth class, this dvd will bring the class home to you. Parents-to-be who can't fit Lamaze classes into their schedules, as well as been-there-done-that parents in need of a refresher course, will welcome Having Your Baby!, a polished, step-by-step instructional program. ( Now also available in a Spanish dvd.) The two instructors are quite engaging and, more important, licensed obstetrical Registered Nurses who are both Lamaze-certified childbirth educators. The production complements its classroom segments with plentiful footage of the real thing: labor, vaginal and cesarean births, and all the obstetrical procedures a mother might face in labor and delivery. Spectacular 3-D animation gives the inside story, so to speak, affording viewers the knowledge necessary to handle the experience with confidence. Topics covered include: What to Expect in Labor , Working with Your Coach, Lamaze Breathing Techniques, Lamaze Relaxation Exercises, Pain Management During Labor and Birth, Epidurals , Medical Interventions, Cesarean Preparation, and more. Having Your Baby! combines the best of an old fashioned Lamaze class with the latest medical information and computer technology. We kept some of the original footage of a Lamaze class (yes, some of our hairstyles look a bit dated, but some things about childbirth just don t change, and we love this footage!) and added updated information, live footage of labor and birth, and computer graphics to make the entire program very enjoyable to watch. It is the only program that teaches 5 breathing techniques and complete relaxation. All breathing techniques are conveniently condensed into one chapter for easy reference. Unlike other videos which have an instructor talking to a home video camera, professionally produced Having Your Baby! takes you directly from the classroom into the hospital, labor room and birthing room, allowing you to see, first-hand, discreet footage of obstetrical procedures, epidurals, labor, vaginal and Cesarean births and much more! No need to search the internet looking for labor or birth footage..... it's all here in one convenient dvd! Having Your Baby! is highly recommended by leading medical professionals and childbirth educators worldwide. Parents-to-be who are interested in the Lamaze method but can't attend a class will be happy to know they can learn it from this two-hour video. Taught by two certified instructors who are OB nurses, this is the only video course that teaches the complete method. Lamaze seeks to reduce pain through relaxation achieved by massage, focus, and a series of breathing techniques. The instructors share an easy rapport, demonstrating the exercises on each other before a roomful of couples and thoroughly explaining the purpose of labor, how to know when it begins, and its three stages. They describe medications and birth complications and include footage of both a natural Lamaze childbirth and a Caesarian delivery. While this tape was clearly shot in the 1980s (the hair styles and fashions are amusingly outdated), it does have new computer-generated diagrams, and the medical information seems up to date. The Lamaze technique itself has not altered, of course, and this tape remains the gold standard in that department. --Kimberly Heinrichs
