DVD Reviews of Hart and Soul: The Hart Family Anthology

DVD Review: Triumph & Tradegy Of The Hart Family
Summary: 5 Stars

Guerrero's, McMahon's, Vachon's, Funk's, Von Erich's, Anoai's...these are all names of some of the biggest influences & names in the wrestling business but there is one wrestling family in the wrestling business who can't be denied as one of the greatest wrestling families of all time, the Hart Family. This is a DVD presentation on the history of the Hart Family with their history in & outside of the wrestling business documented along with an anthology of matches featuring members of the family in action. Throughout the documentry, you hear from various members of the Hart family from the various wrestlers (Keith, Bret, Bruce, Hart Dynasty, brother-in-law Jim Niedhart), Helen & Stu's daughters (Georgina, Elle, Diana) & granddaughters (Georgia & Kristen), along with others (Mad Dog Vachon, Wild Samoan Sika, Rocky Johnson, Chris Jericho, and former Mayor Of Calgary Ralph Klein.)

The documentry begins talking about Stu Hart's childhood of growing up "dirt poor" & how wrestling was introduced to him before going into the love story of how he met Helen & the story behind both of them not being able to have kids (which I laughed at knowing at how many kids they ended up having). How he got into being a promoter for the Stampede Wrestling promotion along with his highly positive reputation is discussed before going into the story being the Hart House including stories of how many animals they had (including where they kept the bear) and you'll also get a funny visual of how the house looked like a circus show with all the various animals & wrestlers on the property. How the Harts went from being so rich to becoming very poor is discussed before going into the details of how all the boys got involved in the wrestling business with various jobs including Bruce becoming a booker that brought in various famous names such as Jake Roberts & Junkyard Dog & British Bulldogs is talked about before going into the stories of how Jim Niedhart & Davey Boy Smith were married into the family. The discussion turns into how the family felt pride in regards to the quality delievered by the British Bulldog vs. Hart Foundation feud including them being apart of WrestleMania III before going into the story behind Stu selling the Stampede territory & how Bruce was very upset about it only to start it up again again which gave people like Owen & Brian Pillman their start. The first tragedy in the family with Dean Hart's death is discussed before going into the family feuds such as the story behind SummerSlam '92 with Davey & Bret wrestling in the main event with Davey having a staff infection going into the match along with the Bret vs. Owen feud that finally gave Owen Hart the spotlight. Another tradegy involving the son of Stu's daughter Georgia's son dying from a flesh eating disease is talked about before going into discussion about the Hart Foundation reunion with the "U.S.A. vs. Canada" war with the highlight being the Canadian Stampede PPV showcasing the last great moment with the entire family together with highlights of where the members of the Hart Dynasty were during the celebration. The documentry takes a downwards turn here as we begin to talk about the downfalls of the family with the death of Brian Pillman (who was concidered a brother), the Montreal Screwjob, their WCW careers which Anvil summerized as "a big mistake", and how Bulldog's painkiller addiction began due to his time in WCW. The death of Owen Hart is discussed next with everyone reflecting on Owen's life, how the lawsuit afterwards divided the family to this day, and how this was related to Helen's death. The deaths of Davey & Stu along with the Hart House being sold are discussed before the documentry is ended on a positive note discussing the formation of the Hart Dynasty (including a mention of Teddy Hart) with stories of how Natayla being the only third generation female & going against her Dad's wishes, how Harry is very similar to his father by having crusierweight abilities with his size, and Bret describing Tyson Kidd as having "excellence of execution." Also throughout the documentry, you get mini-profiles on the Hart children with various comments from the various family members before final reflections of the family close out the documentry.

Bonus Matches (hosted by The Hart Dynasty) Include:
Keith & Bruce & Bret Hart vs. The Kiwis & Dynamite Kid - This was joined in progress & keep in mind that the quality isn't shart as this is archival footage. This was a mix of brawling & wrestling but ended up getting too out of control in the end but it was a good match for it's time.
"Stampede Wrestling" May '79

WWE Tag Team Champions British Bulldogs vs. Hart Foundation - These two tag teams were stealing the show at live events during this time (to the point where this is the fourth time a match against each other has been released to DVD). You got a funny moment before the match between the Bulldog's mascot Matilda & Foundation's manager Jimmy Hart. The Foundation tried to double team Dynamite Kid early but was able to fight his way out of their corner before Davey tagged in & showcased his unbelieveable ability for a man his size including countering an irish whip into a cruifix pin attempt. Unfortunally for the Foundation, Niedhart taking advantage of the referee would come back to haunt them in this match but this was just another classic showcase between these two teams.
"Boston Garden" Nov. '86

WWE Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog - This was a historic match on many levels as this was the only time that only the Intercontinental Championship main evented a PPV & this the second largest WWE crowd to date. Eventhough there were some botches (that Bret acknowledged in his DVD set), these were two of the best WRESTLERS WWE had that that time giving quite the classic performance with the "Diana Hart" factor adding to the drama of the match. As a side note, we get the prematch interviews between both men & Diana in the audience as a bonus here.

Elimination Match: Bret & Owen & Bruce & Keith Hart vs. Shawn Michaels & His Knights - Before I get started incase anyone is confused why Shawn Michaels is teaming with a bunch of "knights", this was originally suppost to be Jerry Lawler in the match but he left WWE for personal issues right before the show causing Shawn Michaels (fresh off being suspended himself) to be a last minute replacement while members of the Hart family were seated at ringside along with Stu Hart being in the corner for the Hart brothers. Outside of seeing the Hart Brothers together with Stu in the corner (along with the comedic interaction between Bobby Heenan & then-Family Feud host Ray Combs), this match was only highlighted by Shawn Michaels being the underrated workhorse that he was at that time by carrying his team & the elimination from the Hart Family that would lead to what is concidered the biggest family feud in WWE history with the constant use of the name "The Shadow" during the commentary foreshadowing the events that would unfold.
Survivor Series '93
[Most Powerful Wrestling Families]

Bret & Owen Hart vs. Steiner Brothers - A "lost" match here as I don't even remember these four wrestling against each other...but I'm glad they did. Bret & Scott traded amature wrestling early with various single & double leg takedowns in the beginning with Rick & Owen later doing the same thing with chain wrestling later on. Both teams throughout the match were just about even on the technical ability with the the Harts having a speed advantage & the Steiners having a power advantage including one moment where Scott Steiner turned a suplex into a piledriver. You saw the early signs of Bret's knee injury as he did hurt it in this match & later returned the favor by going after one of the Steiner's shoulder. This was a very intense battle that did turn into a brawl & got too out of control to the point where the match got thrown out and had officials break up both teams fighting after the match at least 3 times before cooler heads prevailed in the end. I try to not throw out the word "classic" too much but I'll concider this a lost classic when it comes to tag team wrestling during that period in WWE & I really wish that we would have seen more from all four of these men afterwards.
Jan. '94

WWE Tag Team Champions The Quebecers vs. Bret & Owen Hart - Before I get started...for those who don't recognize the Quebecers manager (Johnny Polo), he's better known as Raven from ECW/WWE/WCW/TNA. This was a back & forth match between both tag teams but the match itself was only a backdrop to the issues from Survivor Series once again coming forth as Bret injured his knee here with the Quebecers constantly punishing Bret & kept him from tagging only for Bret to have an opportunity to tag & not taking it by trying to win the match that cost them the match in end...leading to a heavily upset Owen to deliver the "kick heard 'round the world."
Royal Rumble '94

Steel Cage Match: WWE Champion Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart - The entire Hart family was sitting at ringside for this match including Stu & Helen along with the in-laws of Jim Niedhart (who sided with Owen) & Davey Boy Smith (who sided with Bret). Bret Hart said it himself, "We made people forget that a cage match is usually a bloody masscre." This was a classic professional wrestling match to the point to where the cage was only there just to make the moves more high impact...such as that superplex from the top of the cage. The steel cage intended to keep Bret & Owen in the ring while keeping the rest of the family out but the aftermath of the match would definately test that theory.

["History Of WWE Championship" & "Bloodbath: Wrestling's Most Dangerous Steel Cage Matches"]

Bret Hart & Davey Boy Smith vs. Owen Hart & Jim Neidhart - This started off as a brawl but later calmed down in a regular wrestling match. It went back & forth between both teams before Bulldog was heavily worked over while Owen & Anvil constantly caused a distraction with either the referee or Bret himself to prevent Davey from making the tag before he was finally able to make the hot tag to a fresh Bret to led his team to victory. This was a good tag team match.
"Raw" Nov. '94

WWE European Championship Match: Owen Hart vs. British Bulldog - This was the finals of the tournament to crown the first European Champion. At this time, Owen & Bulldog were not only tag team partners but Tag Team Champions for around 5 months at this point. This was a very technical match with both men continuing to show mutual respect towards each other with the crowd getting behind the hometown favorite in the Bulldog. Things didn't start getting dirty till the end with Owen faking an injury but still, this was a great match & damn near perfect way to introduce the new championship.
"Raw" Mar. '97
[Best Of RAW: 15th Anniversary]

Hart Foundation vs. Steve Austin, Ken Shamrock, Goldust, Legion of Doom - This was one of the most unique main events in wrestling history as the Hart Foundation were heels in America but babyfaces everywhere else in the world so they had a heavy hometown advantage with this PPV being in the hometown of the Hart Family of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This was a wild six man tag with various moments like the opening minutes between Bret & Austin, Niedhart mocking Ken Shamrock & paying for it, Austin going so far as to attack the Hart family members at ringside...including getting his hands on Stu, both Owen & Austin being taken out of the match, Pillman making an ass of himself, and the aftermath & celebration.
"IYH: Canadian Stampede" July '97
[Brian Pillman: Loose Cannon]

Flag Match: Bret Hart, Owen Hart, British Bulldog vs. Steve Austin, Undertaker, Dude Love - This started off with just Austin & Dude Love in a handicap match before Undertaker joined their team later on. With the match taking place in Canada, the Harts were the heavy fan favorites here that had a mix of wrestling & brawling between both teams before the "forgotten" member of the Foundation helped the team to victory.
"Raw" July '97
[Joined In Progress On "Best Of RAW: 15th Anniversary"]

WWE Unified Tag Team Champion D-Generation X vs. Hart Dynasty - Eventhough this was setup to be a regular Tag Team Title defense, there was a little background story here concidering how it was this version of DX over a decade earlier that eliminated the Hart Foundation from the WWE. This started off early with Triple H doing his usual mockery of the other team with his taunting D.H. Smith with his dad's (British Bulldog) delayed suplex on Tyson Kidd before Smith returned the favor later on. The Dynasty got the advantage by working over Shawn throughout most of the match building to the hot tag for Triple H to lead the team to victory but it was a good TV quality match & a good showcasing for the Dynasty.
"SmackDown" Dec. '09

I'll say that the documentry is definately one of the best ones WWE has ever done as they showed the proper respect to not just the wrestling history of the family but their entire legacy as a family. As for the match selection, I know that there are a bunch of repeats from other DVD sets but for this being an anthology of the family (not just one select member like Bret, Owen, ect.) then some of the repeats are acceptable...however the keyword here is "some" because I have to ask if the Bret/Bulldog match was absolutely necessary on here since this is the 4th DVD set to have this match on here including Bret's own set...I figured that's why they didn't include any other Bret vs. Owen or Bulldog matches on here since they were already on Bret's set as well. I would have prefered a different match such as an Owen & Bulldog tag match (maybe where they won the tag titles), that forgotten "No Holds Barred" match between Bret & Owen from RAW in Jan. '95, or even a match with Owen & Niedhart as the New Foundation but overall, the match quality from this list is there...just not a big fan on repeating the same match on so many DVD sets. In the end, this is definately a set I would pick up if you haven't already...no questions asked.
