DVD Reviews of Hardware (Two Disc Limited Edition)DVD Review: A bleak look at the future by Richard Stanley. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a really cool sci-fi flick. It was directed by Richard Stanely who also made the underrated cult classic Dust Devil. Granted it's cheesy at times but it's also pretty intense and very artsy. Richard Stanley was a music video director before this movie which explains why there were some weird and cool looking visuals (regardless of what some say I love when music video directors get a chance to direct movies). The acting ranges from good to o.k. (William Hootkins who played in the similar Death Machine goes from being the nastiest talking pervert to singing a really goofy song...which is the movies lowest point). Anyway the movie was very low budget but looks awesome, and the production design is very good as are the effects especially on the killer robot, the movie also has some pretty gory scenes in it that might satisfy some gore hounds out there, one scene in particular has a security guard split in half by large metal sliding doors. It also looks like Blade Runner with a red/orange filter used to film every scene which gives it a gritty and bleak future setting. Set in a desolate 21st century war torn city, Hardware tells the story of Mo (Dylan McDermott), a soldier who buys parts of a junked robot from a scavenger. Mo gives the parts to his girlfriend Jill (Stacy Travis), who makes sculptures out of scrap. Unfortunately Mo doesn't realise that the robot is actually a M.A.R.K.13 cyborg, a highly intelligent military robot, a killing machine that is in fact still functioning... Shot in washed out colors the movie looks and feels like a graphic novel come to life. The world of Hardware is an interesting one, and the movie goes to some length to flesh it out with details. Taking place in a war torn North America Mo's surroundings indicate the harshness and misery brought about by nuclear fallout, fallout caused by a war that the film indicates, is still being fought (during a radio broadcast we hear mention of a "Christmas cease fire" being broken and the radio d.j. happens to be voiced by Iggy Pop!). Another interesting moment comes when we learn that the government is planning on passing something called the Emergency Population Control Bill, a bill that the president says will act as; "a clean break with procreation". Hardware has a pretty good storyline but the actual M.A.R.K.13 robot is one of the movie's strengths in my opinion, and it sports an impressive and slightly spooky design. This film very much like Dust Devil went by un-noticed by some viewers during it's initial release so now that it's been re-released on dvd this provides the perfect opportunity for people to check out this low budget cult classic sci-fi horror film. The uncut anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer provided is simply fantastic. HARDWARE looks naturally dark, but clarity of interior scenes is brilliant. Pin-sharp, smooth and making excellent use of the bold color schemes, this is HARDWARE like you've never seen it before. There's not a blemish or speck on the screen throughout playback - really great stuff. And off course there is a ton of special features including Richard Stanley's great documentary Voices of the moon. There are some others including some interviews and behind the scenes footage as well, this great dvd edition is definitely worth it, check it out.

Description of Hardware (Two Disc Limited Edition)REMASTERED IN STUNNING HIGH DEFINITION FROM ORIGINAL VAULT MATERIALS!
It was the movie that stunned audiences, shocked the MPAA and marked the debut of one of the most uncompromising filmmakers in modern horror. Golden Globe® winner Dylan McDermott (The Practice, Dark Blue) stars as a post-apocalyptic scavenger who brings home a battered cyborg skull for his metal-sculptor girlfriend. But this steel scrap contains the brain of the M.A.R.K. 13, the military's most ferocious bio-mechancial combat droid. It is cunning, cruel, and knows how to reassemble itself. Tonight, it is reborn...and no flesh shall be spared. Stacey Travis (GHOSTWORLD) co-stars - along with appearances by Iggy Pop, Lemmy of Motörhead and music by Ministry and Public Image Ltd. - in the kick-ass sci-fi thriller from Richard Stanley (DUST DEVIL) that Fangoria calls "gritty, trippy and frightnening...HARDWARE is one of the best horror movies you've never seen!"
