DVD Reviews of Happy Gilmore (Widescreen Special Edition)

DVD Review: A golf movie that's actually entertaining.
Summary: 4 Stars

Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler), a man who dreams of becoming a pro-hockey player but who has no talent at ice hockey, except for an incredible slap shot, finds that he does have a talent for golf and uses this talent to win enough money in order to save his grandmother's house from being sold to pay back taxes.

Although not as good as Sandler's previous movie, "Billy Madison" (there's no penguins, for starters), "Happy Gilmore" is still a pretty funny film and likely to please fans of Sandler's weird and slightly-warped humour. The sub-plot featuring Ben Stiller as an orderly who runs a nursing home like a sweatshop is a perfect example of this. What stands out most about "Happy Gilmore", however, is that it actually manages to make golf seem interesting. With his hockey background, Gilmore turns his golfing tournaments into over-the-top madness by swearing, throwing around clubs and beating up other players, thus attracting scores of fans and it makes perfect sense, since while watching it, I kept on thinking how I would pay to watch this sort of thing, too. Hey, by buying this DVD, in effect I did. If you hate Sandler's other films, then you're probably going to hate this as well. Nevertheless, compared to some of the comedies that have been coming out in recent years, "Happy Gilmore" is much funnier and clean enough to show your children, so it is definitely worth giving a chance.

DVD Review: Excellent Family Movie
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a well acted, fun comedy suitable for the entire family, and especially those who enjoy the game of golf, buts it's still worth enjoying even if golf is not your sport..overall a fun movie worth seeing

DVD Review: Best golf comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

This is seriously the funniest golf movie I have seen. Adam Sandler is hilarious! There are a couple of corney parts but Sandler's lines are great. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves comedy and/or golf.

DVD Review: really funny movie one of adam sandlers best
Summary: 4 Stars

I loved this movie and the acting was solid very funny and I would totally recomend this to any Adam sandler fan.

DVD Review: It even makes you laugh if you play in French with English subtitles
Summary: 5 Stars

Just saw it. True...not much in the way of bonus features.

But after you watch it once (or more) in English. It's kind of a kick to then watch in French with English subtitles.
(You can make that selection under LANGUAGE (You can select FRENCH for language and then ENGLISH subtitles.).

The reason I find it especially fun is because it really gets me the way the movie critics are so snobby about Sandler...yet some of the same themes are found in foreign films. When Fellini shows characters or actions considered kind of vulgar or grotesque...it's considered ART. When it happens in Adam Sandler movies the critics call it juvenile or worse.

So, I can't help but suspect if the critics were presented HAPPY GILMORE as a foreign movie...
(French with English subtitles) and told that Sandler was some kind of neorealist comic...or whatever kind of jargon they might throw around to feel important...it would be acclaimed.

Maybe that's why it's playing in France... They can appreciate it! (I guess that's why they took the trouble to dub in French...to sound as though it's actually spoken in French...with lip synced!) Even the romantic parts play well in French!

I happen to agree that Sandler is way underrated. It's not just they his films make you laugh...which is a big deal. But I think part of his power in Happy Gilmore and similar movies is that he's more honest about the range of human characteristics...some noble...some...not exactly noble.,..but human. So, we can identify.

So, even while I'm not enthusiastic about the uncouth parts (and violence) I do think he very accurately expresses our impulses. And he almost ALWAYS plays someone who struggles to do the right thing...

Anyway... Forget the critics...and my ponderous comments. It's a fun movie!

Description of Happy Gilmore (Widescreen Special Edition)

A rejected hockey player puts his skills to the golf course to save his grandmothers house. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/23/2005 Starring: Adam Sandler Run time: 92 minutes Rating: Pg13
Adam Sandler fans are sure to enjoy this no-brainer comedy, but everyone else is strongly advised to proceed with caution. Before scoring a more enjoyable hit with his 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer, the former Saturday Night Live goofball played Happy Gilmore, a hot-tempered guy whose dreams of hockey stardom elude him. But when he discovers his gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards, he joins a pro tour to win the prize money needed to rescue his beloved grandma's home from IRS repossession. The trouble is, Happy's not so happy. He's got a temper that frequently flares on the golf course (he even dukes it out with celebrity golfer Bob Barker), but a retired golf pro (Carl Weathers) and a compassionate publicist (Julie Bowen) help him to perfect his putting game and adjust his confrontational attitude. How much you enjoy this lunacy depends on your tolerance for Sandler's loudmouthed schtick and a shocking number of blatant product-placement endorsements, but if you're looking for broad comedy you've come to the right teeoff spot. --Jeff Shannon
