DVD Review: First men in the moon
Summary: 4 Stars

I own this DVD. This is a real oldie but goodie! I love it now, as I did when I was a boy. Excellent special effects for its time. Very entertaining; even for today's Sci-Fi fans.

DVD Review: Fun movie ahead of it's time
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently got this DVD after not having seen the movie since my childhood in the 60's. Even so, this movie never left my memory in the many years since so I was very delighted to rediscover it in recent days and to find that it still entertained me as an adult. You know how a lot of times you'll remember a movie from long ago in your past and you watch it now and it seems very dated and a letdown? Not the case with First Men In The Moon - I still love this flick! Of course, credit must go to both Ray Harryhausen and the actors: the very British & silly Lionel Jeffries ("GIBBS!"), Edward Judd, and Martha Hyer (who, btw, all are still with us today - I found that a pleasant surprise). This movie is very charming and I'm so glad it's available on DVD. It probably won't hold much value with today's teens but for those of us who fondly remember movies & TV from the 60's, it's a lot of fun.

DVD Review: Frontiers in Outer Space
Summary: 4 Stars

Directed by Nathan H. Juran, the H.G. Wells novel of the same name was adapted to screen by Nigel Kneale, with outstanding spreial effects by a true visionary, Ray Harryhausan.

It is an intriguing spin on space exploration - that was released in 1964 - with the juxtaposition of the claims by the elderly Arnold Bedford (Edward Judd) that he was on a Moon mission years ago and a revolutionary undertaking by countries under the banner of the United Nations to peacefully explore outer space. That Bedford is in a mental hospital undermines his vociferous claims, until the astronauts find on the surface a flag planted for Queen Victoria by Bedford and Joseph Cavor (Lionel Jeffries).

Through flashbacks to the 1890s, the story is told how Bedford and his girlfriend Katherine Callender (Martha Hyer) ended up on the flight to the Moon with inventor/astronaut Cavor, along with the tragedy that ultimately doomed the mission. The story is then picked up with the UN crew and their search for answers concerning the exploration and discoveries from long ago.

This is a solid Sc-Fi film that does not stray too far from the vision of Wells and captures the fascination this nation had for science during the real race to the Moon that propelled one aspect of the Cold War.

Description of H.G. Wells' First Men in the Moon

H.G. Wells' fantastic account of life on the moon is vividly brought to the screen by special effects master Ray Harryhausen in this amazing sci-fi epic featuring unforgettable extra-terrestrial creatures. The film begins with a team of United Nations astronauts planning an upcoming moon mission. The astronauts are both confused and intrigued by a man (Judd) who claims he, his fiancee and a scientist journeyed to the moon 65 years ago and were attacked by "Selenites," grotesque, human-like ant forms that live in immense crystal caverns. Now it is up to the U.N. team to attempt a lunar landing that could be more horrifying than ever believed possible.
