DVD Reviews of Gorillaz - Phase Two - Slowboat to HadesDVD Review: No peek behind the curtain of Gorillaz and the same animation over and over.... Summary: 2 Stars
You know, I was expecting quite a bit from this dvd. I am a huge fan of Gorillaz and I was looking forward to the release of this dvd ever since it was announced a few month ago. Mainly because I live in the states and I have heard so much about the coverage of Gorillaz across the pond over in England, and was hoping to get some insight into the group from the actual creators Jamie and Damon. I purchased this dvd expecting just a little more to tell you the truth.
All the videos are here from Demon Days and a few others like Murdoc is God. But thats it. By the way those videos that you haven't seen that you are like "WOW a new Gorillaz video" are basically flash animations repeated for the entire song. I basically ended up fast forwarding through them hoping for something only to be returned to the menu. There are only 2 Gorilla bites on this dvd unlike the previous dvd. From the track listing they make it seem like there is a lot of of stuff on this dvd I thought so too but everything is very short and you will notice they recycle the same animation quite a bit(like noodle in the capsule hotel 3 things use the exact same animation) which with how much money they have made could have put a little bit more money in some of the production values for content that wasn't a music video or footage intended for a concert. I watched and scanned through most of the content in about 45 minutes.
The live performances are cool, but also you can find more recycled and renamed content and animations here as well. You will notice some performances use the exact same animation which honestly bothered me as well. One aspect that was really cool was to be able to see the performance as a separate item without the glare of the screens they are projected on. Basically its like the Demon Days live dvd. But you honestly can't count that as another performance and they do that here when, it should be set as another angle on the actual performance. If you already own the Demon Days live dvd its nice to see the Gorillaz characters at the forefront of the performance.
One thing that really bummed me out is I know for a fact Jamie Hewlett and Damon have been on a couple of talk shows in england promoting Demon Days and none of that is on here. The previous disc Phase one: Celebrity Takedown has a short mock documentary on the duo that I found to be really interesting even though it was not intended to be a real account by any matter it was just cool to see something from behind the curtain. The bonus disc of games is a nice extra if you have played any of the games on the Gorillaz site you will know they are very addictive and its nice to have them to play anytime. If you looking to have the videos for Demon Days on DVD you wont be disappointed if your looking for a look in to the people behind the band, 2 guys with a band of cartoon character who have taken over the world you won't find any of that here sadly. Here's hoping the book rocks.......
