DVD Reviews of Gone in 60 SecondsDVD Review: Watchable, fun, plenty of digital candy, but predictable and lacks staying power Summary: 3 StarsFirst of all, I know that there are people out there that think that this movie is the absolute greatest. It does appeal to many of the senses, but in my opinion, it lacks the makings of a classic movie. It, however, may qualify as a sort of cult classic, but not a movie classic.
The acting is clearly back-seated to many beautiful cars, hip music, and, surprisingly, big-name actors (e.g., Cage, Jolie, Duvall). I found the storyline to be quite predictable, as was the outcome.
You know the drill...there is an evil bad guy and developments endanger a family member of a good bad guy, thus forcing the good bad guy to bow to the evil bad guy far enough to try to save the other family member. There is also a street-wise cop that has a history with the good bad guy, but their interactions exist primarily to provide a situation for a high speed chase that is included in the movie mainly to total as many cars of as many innocent drivers as possible.
Don't get me wrong...this kind of action movie is amazing...it's got plenty of, well, ACTION. If that's what you are after, "Gone in 60 Seconds" will give it to you.
If you are, however, looking for character development, a story you could watch again and again, and more that digital candy, then this movie is probably not for you.
For those reasons I give this movie 3 stars. You'll probably enjoy watching it, but when you're done there's, alas, not much reason to watch it again.
3 stars...fun action, but it's quite predictable and then forgetable.

DVD Review: watch the last 40 minutes only if you don't want to waste time. Summary: 3 StarsFirst of all, I respect H.B.Haliki for his passion in wanting to make movies to thrill audiences and make himself a renown independent film maker. He made this movie (gone in 60 seconds 1973), the Junkman, and Deadline Auto Theft. His fourth film, Gone in 60 seconds 2, was never completed due to his accidental death during production. He showed with a strong determination, and a good bank account, you can do what you set your mind and heart to. I collected his films, due to his originality in film making, always raising the bar to do what has never been done before on film.I purchased this dvd when it came in 2005, watched it a couple of times and gave it away. I regretted getting rid of it because I did enjoy the film, especially the last 40 minutes of it. So I bought me a new copy a couple of days ago and watched it twice already. It does lack qualities you see in larger produced films, but that is the charm of it. One of my favorite cars is of course the mustang, Whether it be a 67 fastback or a 73 Mach 1, I love them. And this film captures every guys dream who has one or wishes he has one, on driving fast and furious. The chase seen is long, but not the longest, that honor goes to my my favorite car chase flick, Vanishing point, 1971. Hats off to the folks who restored this film, you guy's, truly have an art form there. So watch this movie or any other of his films, enjoy them for there originality, action and testosterone levels that they reach.
Description of Gone in 60 SecondsAcademy Award(R)-winners Nicolas Cage (1996 Best Actor, LEAVING LAS VEGAS; ADAPTATION, MATCHSTICK MEN) and sexy Angelina Jolie (1999 Best Supporting Actress, GIRL INTERRUPTED; LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER) ride an unstoppable wave of speed and adrenaline in this hot, egdy action hit from high-octane producer Jerry Bruckheimer (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, PEARL HARBOR). Legendary car booster Randall "Memphis" Raines (Cage) thought he'd left the fast lane behind -- until he's forced out of retirement in a do-or-die effort to save his kid brother (Giovanni Ribisi, LOST IN TRANSLATION, TV's FRIENDS) from the wrath of an evil mobster! But with speed to burn and attitude to spare, Memphis hastily reassembles his old crew -- a rogues' gallery including Academy Award-winner Robert Duvall (1983 Best Actor, TENDER MERCIES; OPEN RANGE) -- and floors it in a full-throttle race to pull off the ulimate car heist: 50 exotic beauties in 24 hours -- and the cops are already on to them! Directed by Dominic Sena and written by Scott Rosenberg, GONE IN 60 SECONDS is an action-packed thrill ride that comes out fast and never slows down. Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi) is a cocky young car thief working with a crew to steal 50?cars for a very bad man whose nickname is "The Carpenter." Being young and cocky, Kip messes up, so it's up to his big brother, Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage), to come out of car thief retirement and save him. With a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Angelina Jolie, Delroy Lindo, Cage, and Ribisi, it would be easy to say this story wastes all their talents--which it does, but that's not the point. This is a Jerry Bruckheimer film. A good story and complex characters would only get in the way of the action scenes and slow the movie down. No, Gone in 60?Seconds (based on the cult 1974 film of the same name) is not about the stars as much as it's about cars. Fast cars. Rare cars. Wrecked cars. All cars. Too bad director Dominic Sena (Kalifornia) doesn't come across as more of a gearhead; he seems less interested in fast cars than fast cuts. But is this movie fun? Absolutely, and it's fun because it's so stupid. With pointless car chases and hackneyed dialogue in one of the most predictable plots of the year, Gone in 60?Seconds is a comic film that's not quite a parody of itself, but darn close. --Andy Spletzer
