DVD Reviews of Gojira / Godzilla Deluxe Collector's Edition (Gojira/Godzilla [1954] / Godzilla, King of the Monsters [1956])DVD Review: can't beat the original. Summary: 5 StarsThis dvd contains the US version and the original japanese movie. Godzilla king of the monsters is a fun film to watch. It is a movie you would watch on saturday afternoons.Ramond Burr is brought in to make this movie seem like an american one.Godzilla king of the monsters takes out much of the japanese footage replacing it with sceenes of Ramond Burr. Gojira is more of a dark bleak movie where godzilla is a simbol for the atom bomb. This dvd has intresting extras like the makeing of the godzilla suit and godzilla story development. along with audio comentaries, original trailers, and english subs for Gojira. I highly recomend this dvd. It might become your favorite godzilla movies. This is one of the few movies of the showa era of godzilla where big-g is a force of destruction.
DVD Review: This is one of the... Summary: 5 Starscrown jewels in TOHOs catalog-yet a 50th anniversary came and went-
This is a film that deserves Lowery 4k restoration-not a remastering- like Citizen Kane or any number of older films; There are a lot of spots, and visual artifacts/damage-sound artifacts, poor grayscale (too dark in some scenes)
What we have is very good-but why TOHO hasnt done a digital restoration is beyond me
DVD Review: Still the best Godzilla movie and still superior to modern CGI monster movies Summary: 5 StarsI had to write a review since Godzilla has been my hero and my favorite monster of all time for over 3 decades. This is th one that started it all. Gojira was originally supposed to be a giant Octopus actually. This has horror elements and was a serious monster movie. Its message has to do with nuclear war, basically he results of when Japan was nuked during WW2. I would recommend seeing the original Japanese version to get the full effect. The Raymond Burr version isnt bad, but there is way too much cut from the Japanese version of the film that it just becomes another monster movie. An all time favorite of mine, since I was a kid. Godzilla has been a part of my world seemingly for most of my life. Inspired in part by the Beast of 20,000 fathoms. The story here is outstanding as are the effects which still hold strong today. I cant recommend this high enough. They just cant make them like this. Ive seen Godzilla more times than any other Kaiju movie, including in theaters. Watch this and see why it was such a hit and was a serious movie. I would rather watching this movie non stop over and over for a whole month than watch something like Cloverfield or Gamera the Brave or some of those new CGI monster movies that are directed by people who dont understand the genre and by actors who cant act. Nothing can ever touch this movie except for movies of that era which include the Ray Harryhausen movies mainly. And yes I do think this is as good as King Kong 1933, it is right up there.
DVD Review: Gojira a must see for fans and non fans alike Summary: 5 StarsThe original is quite different (and darker) than the version put together for Western audiences. Although most of the same scenes are used, the meaning of the original is lost. I recommend seeing the original, it is great, the special effects are very good for the time period and the message is not obscured. The commentary is interesting and informative. I understand why things were changed for the viewers in the western world considering the times, you have to understand the thinking of that era (in both areas of the world)in order to understand both versions.
Then sit back, make some more popcorn and watch Raymond Burr, it's not just another rubber monster movie!
DVD Review: A masterpiece revealed Summary: 5 StarsI highly recommend this set for all Godzilla fans, especially if you like old monster movies. It has the english and japanese versions of this film. Personally, I think the japanese version is the best, because it doesn't have any narration. Plus, you feel like you're part of the story. The english version is good too, I'd say they are about even. The thing I like about the japanese versions of Godzilla films, is that it's easier to understand what's going on. Of course, you would have to be willing to read subtitles. This is a must-have for any fan looking for both versions of the Godzilla films.

The first of the Godzilla movies, and the most somber and serious in tone, Gojiro was originally a 98-minute Japanese horror film, until a U.S. company bought the rights and reissued the film at 79 minutes, replacing sequences involving a Japanese reporter with new inserts of a dour, pipe-smoking Raymond Burr. Both versions appear together for the first time in this release from Sony Wonder. Stills from Gojiro (click for larger image)
