DVD Reviews of Gilmore Girls: The Complete Series CollectionDVD Review: A great series, one of the best ever shown on TV! Summary: 5 Stars
I love the Gilmore Girls! Every year since the show was first released on DVD. I've been watching this over and over, it's that addictive. This DVD set is a must-have for fans [and especially for those fans who've worn out their old DVDs like I have:)]. Here's a recap of each season:
Season 1
Gilmore Girls centers around the life and exploits of single mother Lorelai Gilmore [the amazing Lauren Graham] who raises her only child Rory [stunning Alexis Bledel]in the idyllic town of Stars Hollow, somewhere in Connecticut. Its an amazing drama...every episode here in Season One makes you really come to know and love the characters, both main and secondary. We come to care about what happens to Lorelai & Rory...in Season One, 16 year old Rory gets accepted into the prestigious private school Chilton, and Lorelai has to grapple with the problem of how to finance it, and out of desperation approaches her estanged parents for help. The chemistry between the two leads as mother and daughter is electrifying and altogether credible...Lorelai's parents, Emily and Richard Gilmore are portrayed as stuffy, upper-class people who use money as the means to keep tabs on their daughter and granddaughter. Of course, the stories go deeper than that, and the characters themselves develop in greater depth as the series goes on...but herein lies the charm in Gilmore Girls...the dialogue, witty repartee and stellar acting from all characters make this a show that grows from strength to strength and makes an addict of the viewer.
The residents of Stars Hollow are an eccentric bunch indeed - be it Luke of Luke's Diner, Ms Patty the dance teacher, Taylor the town councilman,Michel the crabby concierge, Sookie St James the irreverent cook and BFF of Lorelai, Lane Kim as Rory's sidekick - we come to love each of these characters for their roles in the series.
Season 2
Season Two sees us revisiting Stars Hollow, the idyllic little Connecticut town that is home to Lorelai Gilmore and her teenage daughter Rory. There are some interesting plot developments in this season - Lorelai gets engaged to Max and faces some dilemmas and inner conflict, Rory's stable relationship with Dean, her long-term boyfriend is threatened by the arrival of Jess, a rebellious teenager from NY who also happens to be Luke's nephew, and of course, the turbulent relationship that Lorelai has with her parents, Richard and Emily Gilmore goes through more upheaval. And Luke gets into some romantic entanglements of his own.
There are other interesting developments in this season that make GG an addictive must-watch - Rory's rivalry with Paris Geller, Richard's forced retirement and its aftermath, Christopher's re-entry into the Gilmore girls' lives and many more. The eccentric townspeople of Stars Hollow add to the appeal of the show, Taylor Doose's 'dictatorship' of the town goes to new heights, Kirk's manic antics and many more. All of which, coupled with rapidfire witty dialogue that has become the trademark of the show make Gilmore Girls a rare gem amongst TV series - great casting, excellent scripts and beautiful, scenic sets. A must-watch indeed!
Season 3
Season Three of the Gilmore Girls is one of the best of all seven seasons. In this season, Rory [Alexis Bledel] is in her final year at Chilton private school and faces some of the most trying times, be it manouvering political games within the student body, or the love triangle between her, Dean [Jared Padalecki] and Jess [Milo Ventimiglia]. Alexis Bledel does a wonderful job in this season and truly shows her maturing as an actress.
Of course, Lorelai [Lauren Graham] continues to shine in her role as a single mom, best friend to her daughter, and aspiring inn owner. Lorelai, fresh from the romantic disappointments of the previous two seasons finds herself sort of lost, and dates around, never truly finding a soulmate. Diner owner Luke Danes [Scott Patterson] is always there to lend his unwavering support and of course, Luke and Lorelai's chemistry is simply magical to watch, be it as good friends or as two people slowly being drawn towards each other.
The rocky relations between Lorelai and her parents Emily and Richard Gilmore [ Kelly Bishop and Edward Hermann] goes through its usual turbulent times and its always entertaining to see Lorelai in action and putting her parents in their place, despite their overbearing attitude. Kelly Bishop's Emily is truly a delight to watch as she plays the snooty, controlling character to perfection.
Amidst the changes in the main characters' lives this season, the most significant ones are the Rory-Jess-Dean love triangle, and for once we see Rory getting out of her goody-two-shoes character by going after Jess despite being Dean's girlfriend and the episode "They Shoot Gilmores Don't They" shows the resolution to this. There is also the college application anxiety, is it going to be Harvard or Yale?
Lorelai's dreams of opening her own inn are developed in greater detail this season, as we see her working hard towards achieving that dream, especially with a certain event that acts as a catalyst towards that end.
Season 4
Season Four was a hard season for the Gilmore Girls, and this was primarily because of Rory's [Alexis Bledel] going off to Yale. This changed the dynamics of Lorelai [Lauren Graham's] and Rory's interaction, being reduced to mainly trying to get each other on the cellphone. There was an element of being lost here for both characters, but especially so with Rory, who after breaking up with Jess in Season three [well, technically it was Jess just walking out on Rory] finds herself trying to adapt to a whole new environment [the only constant being Paris, who is her roomie at Yale] and with no real romantic suitors around.
Lorelai finds herself and Sookie seeing their dreams of an inn becoming a reality, though with many problems in between. Lorelai gets romantically entangled with her father's business partner, Jason aka Digger Stiles [Chris Eigeman] and the problems the relationship poses. However, Jason is not really a character that appeals to viewers, coming across as stuffy and unsuitable for Lorelai.
Despite these hiccups, there are some truly great episodes which keep viewers entertained [The Festival of Living Art for example, and the episode where Luke realises a certain winsome coffee addict is his true soulmate].
Season 5
Season Five starts off with a bang, and just keeps getting better with every episode. At the end of Season Four, Rory [Alexis Bledel] sleeps with her married ex-boyfriend Dean [Jared Padalecki] and the beginning of Season Five sees Rory being 'sent' off on a European tour with her grandma Emily [Kelly Bishop], a ruse by Lorelai [Lauren Graham] hoping that things will cool between Rory and Dean.
The plot twists in this season are fascinating - Rory eventually finds herself drifting apart from Dean, and drawn towards rich kid, Logan Huntzbeger [Matt Czuchry] which delight the senior Gilmores but not Lorelai. Luke and Lorelai's relationship grows from strength to strength, with some major hiccups in between, no thanks to the interference of Emily Gilmore [Kelly Bishop] and Christopher.
The last two episodes of this season truly keeps you riveted as a dejected Rory turns to a desperate act that lands her not only in trouble with the law but also causes a rift between her and her mother, Lorelai.
Season 6
Season 6 marked a major change in the series in that we see Lorelai & Rory having a huge disagreement, and how this affects their relationship and those around them, but it also shows us that despite everything these two remarkable women are always able to sort things out, and we cheer them on from the sidelines.
Season 7
Season 7 was in my opinion the weakest in the series. The absence of Amy-Sherman Palladino's witty dialogue was sorely felt during this season - the rapid-fire banter just didn't sound authentic and many times, the lines felt forced though I must say Lauren Graham tried her best to make the most of what she was given. The focus on Lorelai [Lauren Graham] and Christoper was annoying to me as I never really liked Chris that much, and there weren't enough Luke and Lorelai scenes because of the rift between them. What I really missed most was the absence of character development of the other inhabitants of the town that made up a lot of the show's appeal. Also, Emily and Richard, two `beloved' characters on the show did not get much screen time either - there was just too much of the Lorelai-Chris conflict and that dampened my enthusiasm for this season. And the resolution to the show that culminates in Stars Hollow celebrating Rory's graduation from Yale felt like a rush job - everyone gathers there but it seems forced once again [though I did like the mother-daughter scene at Luke's Diner] and the resolution to Luke and Lorelai also seemed too brief.
CONCLUSION - a great TV show and a must-have set here [at the discounted rate offered by Amazon] for GG fans!
But on the whole, Gilmore Girls as an entire show from Seasons 1-7 is still one of the best dramas ever shown on television [even though it ended almost two years ago] and I believe it will continue to entertain many more people who love quality TV for a long time to come. It's a true classic!
