Flighty,annoying,selfish,attention-seeking,gabby,self-centred,indecisive mother who is impressed with herself to the nth degree, and sappy,indecisive,pliant,wishy-washy,spoilt daughter are the main characters in this series set in a (hopefully fictitious) Connecticut town entirely peopled by unbelievable eccentrics(or are they aliens?).
I have seen the gushing reviews,but while the acting may be good(hopefully it is acting), the characters are not people you would want to be near.The mother/daughter combo spend a lot of time ordering food or coffee etc and never actually consuming any of it,as they have the attention span of gnats and flutter off to something else constantly.
The mother's behaviour is that of a 10 year old.Everything has to be her way or not at all.It's always about what she wants and no one else counts.And the daughter seems to have no spine whatsoever and seems to think that everyone should adore her on principle.No wonder they both fail in their relationships with men.
I was reminded of that great moment in a Jack Nicholson film,where his character is a writer of "women's novels", and he is asked how does he write so accurately about women.His character responds that he basically writes as though they were men, only he removes any and all accountability,responsibility,reason,logic and rationale in their behaviour.
This is a perfect description of Gilmore girls.
