DVD Review: Great performance, poor recording

This Broadway rendition of Pirates made in Central Park (80's) is probably the best performance I've seen with this cast. I was hoping to find the movie with the same cast (Angela Landsbury is in the movie as the maid), but this copy will have to do until it is out on DVD. The quality is poor in places, but the music, singing, and acting is the best ever! It's worth the purchase! Kevin Klein IS the pirate king! No one has done it better. DVD Review: Do not buy this dvd!

The only good thing about this product is the fact that Kevin Kline, Rex Smith and Linda Ronstadt are actually in it. I wish I could give this NO STARS!
The quality of the transcription to DVD is extremely POOR with washed out color and poor editing.
This is a stage production and suffers from poor camera angles and blocking. Oh God, the microphone was placed next to the xylophone and it is played loudly in the Major General's song!
The last thing I leave you with is DO NOT BUY THIS DVD! Wait for the studio production with Angela Lansbury in the cast to go to DVD and buy that one.

This is hilarious!
Kevin Kline and Rex Smith are terrific, as are the other less famous actors. Linda Ronstadt was poorly cast and can't act at all; but if you can ignore her part, you will enjoy this version of a classic operetta!

I've loved Gilbert & Sullivan operettas for upwards of 70 years. Now I'm grieving over the worst DVD reproduction of a performance it's ever been my misfortune to view. The sound is atrocious, the orchestra drowns out the lyrics time & again, the diction of various performers is unintelligible, the camera coverage is erratic & clumsy, the color is washed out, and...I could go on & on. The ultimate insult is a forced presentation of 15?, 20? trailers for other Broadway Theatre Archive productions before the Pirates of Penzance begins. A total disaster!

Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp. ENDThis Pirates of Penzance is primarily a historical document, part of the Broadway Theater Archive television series. It presents, with some inevitable, tiny technical shortcomings, a live 1980 performance in Central Park, not the 1983 movie of the same name that also starred Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline. Those who remember that film, which had the benefit of retakes and editing, a lavish production budget, and the spaciousness of a Hollywood studio, may find this video less polished. On its own terms, it is nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable.
Advantages of this live performance include a sense of spontaneity, and the feeling of being part of a theatrical audience that is visibly and audibly having a very good time. The (reduced and partly electronic) orchestra is also visible; scenery is minimal; the onstage pirate boat, excellent for a live production, is no match for what a movie can offer. The voices are uneven, and some of them evoke Broadway more than London. But the performance is well styled, lively, and energetic. Gilbert and Sullivan's witty sparkle comes through clearly. --Joe McLellan
