DVD Review: Just for the girlies I'm afraid

I have loved the movie Ghost since I was a little girl, and I first taped it off the TV. How sad. But even now, with the special edition DVD, and the fact that I'm now in my twenties, doesn't make watching the "two deaths"/shadow demons bit any easier. That totally freaked me out as a kid, and even now, I had to turn away, even the sound sent shivers up my spine. Apparently, the sound is babies screaming, but slowed down. Ugh. I've progressed from hiding behind the couch, to hiding behind a cushion, to turning my face away, and closing my eyes. My aren't I growing up.
Ghost is definitely a classic of the nineties, and I can't believe so many actors turned down the role of Sam Wheat, because they felt it wouldn't work. Even the director thought Patrick Swayze wasn't right for the role, and has famously said (and denies it) that he would have Patrick for the role "over his dead body".
Ghost stories can sometimes be overdone in the world of film, but this is done with some sensitivity, and also from the ghost's point of view. Doesn't make me any keener on Demi Moore's hairstyle in this. The only hairstyle worse than this is the one she sported in GI Jane. Not a good look. I have to disagree with other reviewers that say this is a great date movie. It's not. I wouldn't even dream of even asking my boyfriend to watch this with me. Probably cos he wouldn't like it, and would hate every minute of it. But we can't all like the same stuff.
I did have a few problems with one of the extras on this DVD though. I just re-read my old Amazon review and here's what I originally said about the extras: "There's a lack of extras on this DVD, apart from a trailer, a commentary, and "interviews with the cast" - which is basically re-showing the whole movie all over again! Think of the most boring extras ever, and bam, there they are on the Ghost DVD. Please, use your imagination for once."
They have taken my advice (why wouldn't they?), the extras are short & sweet, but I think the same featurette from the first edition is on the first disc of this edition, which isn't too bad. But then I put on the second disc, watched the first featurette - and it's almost word perfect, clip perfect of the same featurette, just a couple of years on. And I'm very disappointed that the interview with Demi Moore is a very old interview. Patrick, and the director, and the screenwriter came back for new interviews, but hers is old.
All the actors do a brilliant job, but I did feel the whole storyline with Carl, Sam's best friend, and his girlfriend, Molly, (where he pours coffee over himself and removes his shirt to show off his physique) was unnecessary. And it didn't quite work with the tone of the rest of the film either. Tony Goldwyn did an alright role, but that whole segment for me just didn't feel right. As if the audience would believe Molly would go with Carl, who was Sam's best friend, just after he'd died.
The major scene stealer in this film, who quite rightly should have had more screen time, was the late great Vincent Schiavelli, who died from lung cancer at the end of 2005. He was one of the great character actors, and although he was simply credited in this as Subway Ghost, he stole the show from Patrick, and was just amazing. He's well missed. If I mention Vincent Schiavelli, I also have to mention the actor who played Willie Lopez, Rick Aviles. He also sadly died in 1995, from AIDS.
What I think would have made this film work even more, is if Molly had found out she was pregnant with Sam's baby. But is that too much? I think it would have made the ending so sweet if she'd told him she was pregnant. But then it could have sent it into OTT schmaltzy. But what pregnancy wouldn't be good in a film?
I absolutely LOVE the score to this film, and that's something coming from me, cos I often have trouble with scores on films. Play me them back, and I won't have a CLUE what film it's from. And the film is enhanced by the song "Unchained Melody" which became a hit all over again. But my problem with that song now is that it's been covered so many times, but it's never been covered (to my knowledge), nor has it ever charted, by a female singer. I think it would add a whole other element to the song if it was sung by a woman.
What you'll discover after watching, is that clay could be so sexy! I did pottery during school, and although I never mastered it, it's something I would like to have a go at again. But I'm certain none of the guys in my class ever jumped on me as he did to Demi.
This is a brilliant movie and definitely should be in everyone's collection. It's one you can take out at anytime and put on, and be instantly happy.
And on that note: Ditto.

Patrick Swayze plays a ghost who teams with a psychic (Whoopi Goldberg) to uncover the truth behind his murder - and to rescue his sweetheart (Demi Moore) from a similar fate. Ditto to that!Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze are the passionate lovers whose romance is undone when the latter is murdered during a bungled hit arranged by a rival.
